left final driveHey guys iam putting oil seal the one that keeps the oli from reaching brakes ? the bearing retainer wher the oil seal goes i no there are some shims behind the retainer but is there any type seal or gasket etc that i need to replace Also the shaft that goes through the brake drum it has a little groove on it where the oil seal rides the groove is not very deep just wondering should i drive the seal in a little futher? Thanks for all the help
Re: left final driveIt has an o ring on it. If it has a grove it will most likely leak IF THE SEAL rides in that grove

Re: left final driveThis is something I've done before...Try to position the seal in the housing so the seal lip is not in the groove. If that can be done you'll be ok.
I don't know what O'ring Boss is talking about though...maybe I'm thinking of the wrong seal.... I’m really good at doing nothing…With that said…I’m really, really good at doing nothing
Re: left final driveJack, talking about the retainer that the seal goes in, there is an o ring on it where it slides into the case to keep it from leaking

Re: left final driveThe bearing retainer does not need to be removed to change the oil seal, just pry it out using a puller or a large screw driver....
Compare you new seal to the old one to see just where it will ride, chances are it's much thinner and will be in a different location. ![]() Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote. Ben Franklin

Re: left final driveIt sounds to me like the differential bearing carrier seal? There is also a seal on the final drive (behind the brake). The old ones were leather.
It may be wise to check the level in the transmission, but if you are going to do that may as well drain it and change it. (HyTran recommended). They are know to fill up with water and the easiest place to drain is out the differential seals and then onto the brakes and eventually out the drain holes under the brakes. 1971 Cub (Rufus) 1950 Cub (Cathy) 1965 Lo Boy Fast Hitch (Nameless III) 1970 Cub 1000 Loader & Fast Hitch (Lee)
