Farmall Cub pulling IH 14 Side Delivery Rake?

Postby WaMoo » Sun Jan 27, 2013 5:17 pm

Yes, I've seen the pictures on the internet and the YouTube videos of the Cub pulling a IH 14 Side Delivery Rake...

But, does anyone on this board have personal experience pulling one? I'm in the market for a rake my Cub can pull, and my local dealer has one. Just because a Cub can pull an implement, doesn't necessarily mean it should. I read about concerns with tongue weight. I don't know the tongue weight of a 14 is. I have a fast hitch on my Cub.

I'm just curious what people thoughts are? I've heard they never designed a Cub specific side delivery rake because it could handle regular rakes. Thanks in advance!

How many acres do you plan to rake with it? Have you considered a dump rake mounted on a cub like my Ford-Mac dump Rake?

I don't know the tongue weight of that rake, but the whole thing is probably just a bit over 1,000 pounds. So I don't think the tongue weight should be a problem.

If you are concerned about tongue weight, Get a rake with a front dolly wheel assembly with a draw bar tongue. Essentially, you will not have any draw bar weight with this and it is much easier to hitch up.

Looks like a perfect fit. Not sure if it's the exact model, but very similar.

When I was a kid I remember raking with a Cub and an old steel wheel horse rake. The new ones pull much easier, and I don't think thew tongue weight would be a problem. Dad bought a New Holland rake similar to those shown, and it was not all that heavy.

I rake out hay with cubs now as steering old Olivers with no power steering gets tiring and the cubs use much less gas.

It doesn't take much horsepower to pull a rake. A Cub should handle an 8' rolling bar rake like an IH #35 or New Holland #256 without a problem in 2nd gear.

Having raked hay since I was 10 years old, I would probably tear my hair out raking any appreciable acreage with a Cub. Way too slow at 3.2MPH.

As long as time isn't of the essence, a Cub will do a fine job pulling a rake.

Thanks everybody! I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought the rake. It even has new tires!

Here's a pic. The right tire is backwards for ground drive.

Both tires should be "backwards" as there should be some type of ratchet system to drive from both wheels.
I have raked with a Cub, but it is slooow. That being said, if all I had to pull a rake was a Cub,the Cub would pull the rake.
Best,
Mike

By backwards, I meant that it was facing the wrong way. The left tire is facing the correct way, while the right tire, which I claimed is backwards, needs to be turned around.
