I am replacing the voltage regulator on my Cub. I bought a VR851 from the local NAPA store. It came with an external resistor kit. My old regulator did not have this. Do I need to install this resistor? It is a beautiful sunny day here in Eastern Washington. I want to get the Cub running so I can play around with the grader blade that I just bought.

Snow/blizzerd and cold here. If your cub has a high low charge on your light switch then you will need the resistor. Usually cubs for 47 to late 49 had a cut out not a regulator.LHDB in light switch. if you cub doesnt have the LHDB on the light switch then you wont need the resistor.

this may be a stupid question, but is it a resistor, or a capacitor?

its prob a resistor to cut back the load terminal on the regulator so it doesnt charge full bore all the time. Capacitor stores energy doesnt it?

How much did it cost?? Might have been cheaper to convert to an alternator. I have a poster from the correct police but a 1 wire alternator is generally cheaper over the long run. Why do you think new cars and trucks as well as tractors come with them???????????????????????????????????????/
