question about 6v batteries

Postby byrongraham » Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:24 am

Is it uncommon for a 6v battery to weaken overnight if it is very cold. And if I leave it hooked up to a charger overnight will the charger not continue to charge once it completes thereby harming the battery.. thanks

Simple answer is yes a battery could lose some of it's effectiveness in very cold weather whether it is a 6v or a 12v. Automatic battery chargers sense when the battery had achieved full charge. A battery charger is overkill. A battery maintainer is a good idea especially if your battery is getting a little weak.

I have 4 of them now as well as a dedicated 12v maintainer for a lot of my equipment. I find that if I use the maintainer and keep Ellie's battery well charged I have no problems starting and she usually starts on the 1st or 2nd turn of the starter. A good buy in my mind especially when it is -30C/-30F outside :D

I have several of the units like Rudi pictured. Different label, but that could just be a Canada/US thing.

Automatically selects between 6V and 12V.

Make sure your battery charger is automatic,so it will do as Rudi said. The chargers will have automatic written on them. You can ruin batteries charging them overnight with without the automatic feature.Don't ask how I know this...LOL

You need to be sure you read the owners manual for the charger you have.
Mine will charge 6v and 12v batteries.
However, the AUTOMATIC Mode only works on the 12v settings.
6v charge is MANUAL, you must disconnect it yourself to stop the charge.
