Hello Cub board!
Long time away, took lotsa pills, hope they work.
I am in need of knowledge about carb cleaner preferences...
I have a very cruddy carb that needs my attention and have had no luck doing a search on the board for existing threads.
Help!?

I've purchased a gallon can of chemical dip a number of years ago. Dipped and cleaned quite a number of disassembled carburetors. Kinda nasty stuff but does remove crud and paint and is fairly expensive for only one carburetor.

Couple spray cans of carburetor cleaner. Works great and you can use the plastic tubing to blow/clean out carburetor passages. If you are only going to work on one carburetor - 2 or 3 spray cans of carburetor cleaner will be much cheaper.

Umm, Boss. Just what is a soda blast? Some baking soda with water in the carb parts in a bucket? Let me know, please?

Its like a sand blaster, only it uses baking soda, that dissolves in water, so it can't plug passages. You can soda blast, with the hand held blasters, with baking soda, for a small job, like a carb. Ed

It's a gun, similar to a high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray gun; hopper on top, gravity fed. Here's a pic:

This is what a soda blasted carb looks like. This is the original 1950 carb. I used a cheapo blaster as shown in the previous post, and a box of arm and hammer baking soda. Wear eye protection and a dust mask. Then wash the carb thoroughly in hot soapy water, and install a complete rebuild kit.

That's about what I recall NAPA's price was for what they market, but the Berryman's was about $20 at Autozone.

I have both the NAPA brand carb cleaner --- yuuuuuk . This has got to be the most vile compound I have ever come across and I have smelled a lot of cruddy VOC's in my lifetime. I won't use it and I consider it a colossal waste of badly needed cash for my Cub Fund. I truly regret purchasing it. Now that I have COPD/PF this gallon will either got directly to my local HazMat Recycle facility or to someone who really likes/wants/needs it.

My preference is definitely Berryman's. I first learned about it when Don introduced it to me back in '06 at Cecil's. It took me almost 3 years to get some but I finally managed to smuggle some into Canada Berryman's is a very low odour VOC and one that I can say is one of the safest to use.

I also have one of those guns used for soda blasting. I am going to try that on some of my older carbs this spring when it warms up enough to play with them. They are already pretty clean from dipping in Berryman's but I really would like to see them a little brighter. Wire wheel only gets into so many places unless you have the Dremel and it's multitude of min wire brushes.

Cheep and does one heck of a job, just build your own out of what you have on hand.
