weird but cool looking plow
I was looking through Ebay and came across what they are calling a Salt Plow. Basically a moldboard plow with what almost looks like flames cut in the moldboard. I have never seen nor heard of this type of plow, does it serve any special purpose or is it even better then a regular moldboard?

Re: weird but cool looking plow
I think they may have meant to say "slat" plow or slat wing plow. They were designed to be used with sticky soils. Less surface area allowed the sticky soil to roll off easier.

Bob has it covered there. That is the 194 fast hitch version I have the 193 version of that plow.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: weird but cool looking plow
We had one, 2 bottoms, in central Iowa. Used it in early spring when soil was wet. Suppose to help keep soil from sticking to moldboard. Used the slat bottom plow along with standard moldboard when thing dried up a bit.Jim Becker wrote:Slat bottoms were designed for sticky clay [ gumbo] type soils. They were supposed to pull easier. We tried one back in the early 60's couldn't see much advantage.
As Jim said, didn't seem to be an advantage over standard moldboard plows. Actually think the reason Dad and Grandpa purchased the plow was that it had 12" bottoms and the tractors were having problems pulling the 16" bottom plows.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: weird but cool looking plow
We have Red Clay soil here in our county, and most of the old plows I accumulate are Slat wing, including the 194 above. The solid mold boards plows I have around came from either another county, or another state. Disc plows usually come from far off also. Cubs were not a big seller locally, run across more larger letter series (H-M) equipment or green stuff, still slat wing even when changing brands.

Re: weird but cool looking plow
Saw what looked like an eight bottom slat plow on a Brittish TV show a few days ago. Soil it was plowing sure did look wet, but those furrows looked just fine.

Re: weird but cool looking plow
I have that same plow for a cub, but it has a broken slat or two. I have a Allis three bottom slat plow. That three bottom work good in this heavy clay soil.
