Retread / Buffed Tires

Has anyone here tried buffed or retread tractor tires ? Tire Town and Nebraska Tire advertise them and I am curious as to their appearance and performance. I dont think I will be buying any , just curious as to their characteristics.

I have one 13.6 X 28 on a WD Allis that was recapped. It appears that additional material was added over a worn tread. The recapping has worn through on the top of the treads. The tire is still in good condition.

Are recaps a value. I don't know.

Years ago I had a rear tire off an H booted - tear through the sidewall. No problems with the boot.

If your experience is typical I am inclined to believe the recapas may not be a total bargain :big give up:

I don't know if the recapped tire I have is normal for tractor tires or not. On car tires the tread is ground off then a complete new cap is applied.

I don't give up on a tractor tire until the tube shows through the sidewall. Then I buy a new tire.
 
years ago we ran recaps on our tractors, as well as on our old pickup. They were a good deal at the time and held up well, but the last tiem I checked the price difference between recaps and new were pretty small.

Buffed tires have the manufacturer and serial buffed off them. there is no warranty, or if the tires prove to be defective, no recall.
 
I remember selling recaps about 26 years ago and they were a pretty good deal back then. Now their pretty picky about the casings that are used. On the truck tires we still sell the casings can't be more than 2 years old...
If it requires a casing to trade in and your's is bad you just as well buy new because there's not much difference in the prices anymore.
 
I remember years ago that you could get individual lugs put back on. 6 or 8 years ago I had the right rear booted and vulcanized to fix a nickel size hole in the side of the tire. Still working. Left rear has a large crack with cord hanging out. After 45 years I still have good tread, but don't know how much longer they will last. Second set on front still going strong. they were replaced in the 70's.
 
Have to buy a new tire and tube for the recapped rear tired on the WD Allis a soon as the snow melts and warms up a bit.

Went to acreage today in son's F250 Ford. 4 inches of slushy snow with unfrozen gravel on road way. Towed the F250 up the incline with tractor rears slipping and grinding in the gravel all the way. Pretty much pealed the remainder of the cap off the carcass.

Wow. 4 year old topic. Think I got the goody out of the tire with an additional 4 years usage.

Just repaired the crack I mentioned in previous post. Waiting on red paint to put every thing back on tractor. 50 years and still rolling!
