Super a won't run smooth

Postby southernthunder » Wed Mar 06, 2013 4:20 pm

My neighbor has a super a that I have been trying to give him a hand with. We went through the carburetor and distributor. I can adjust the air screw at idle and get it running pretty smooth but when you speed the engine up it starts to lope (up and down). I can adjust the air screw again and get it to level off a little bit but when I go back to idle I have to adjust the screw back to keep it level. We adjusted the timing when we replaced everthing in the distributor.. Doesn't this sound like I still have carb trouble or is there something else to try. Currently I have taken the carb back off, boiled it, and have had it in my ultrasonic cleaner with carb dip for the past 2 days. Going to get it back together and installed in the next day or so. Any other ideas? Thanks, mike

Sounds like you probally have a govenor issue, easy way to check is to unhook the rod to the carb, start engine and manually move carb butterfly to various speed ranges ( do not over rev). If your loping issue is gone you need to adjust the govenor to start. If still present look for vacuum leak.

Ok, thanks, now how about the procedure for adjusting the governor?. The simple version if available.

First off make sure the governor is timed to the carburetor correctly. Engine off, push the throttle to full and then unhook the clevis for the carburetor throttle rod on the left side. Adjust the length of the rod, if necessary, so that the pin will slide in place easily with the carburetor throttle held wide open, without touching the governor arm.

Once that is done, go over to the right front where the governor is. On the bottom of the governor is an acorn nut. Remove that nut to expose the governor bump spring adjustment. It also has a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjustment screw in a little bit with a stubby flat screwdriver, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn. Tighten the lock nut, then test run the tractor. Give it a little more if necessary. Replace the acorn nut.

Not sure if it was the governor or the carb but after adjusting as stated above and rebuilding and installing the carb, it purrs like a kitten. Thanks again for all the help, mike
