Re: parts estimate
Update: after a lot of searching the web and such for crossover numbers I finally got almost everything ordered for my tranny/ final drive rebuild. the only bearing I have not got as a Timken replacement was the front spline shaft (it was another brand) and the rear spline shaft bearing. I have skf,new departure, agco, ntn and several more cross numbers that will work if I slightly reduce the diameter of the shaft that goes in it. I found this info in an old post here because several people were having trouble due to wear on the shaft from the original rollers direct on shaft. Sounds like a good cheaper fix to tighten this up. Total is looking like about $500 which includes doubling each seal where there is room. Any suggestions on anything else I may need to replace while in it. I have all the seals, gaskets and bearings I can find in the parts book. just hoping to have everything in the shop when I start the rebuild. thanks guys

Re: parts estimate
Someone on this board commented that using 2 seals was not a good idea. The seals are designed to run wet. The outside seal will wear quickly and just become a dirt trap that will degrade the inner seal. Better to use the thinner seal to choose a clean, unworn spot on the shaft to do its job.

Re: parts estimate
thanks for the imput bob. all of the research I found on here suggested to use 2 seals in the place of some of the original double seal (rubber and leather). Maybe I should start another thread and ask everyone what they think. If that's the case I will have a start on parts for my next project thanks

If memory serves me, it was Steve K. Calif that posted this. He is a bearing and seal professional.

Re: parts estimate
with all of the input I received so quickly on the new post, and from your suggestion, I will only be putting a single seal in the most appropriate, smoothest spot on the shaft for each location.. thanks so much, mike

Re: parts estimate
You will like the sealed bearing fix for the input shaft. I did that for my 1950 Cub project and I was very pleased with the results.

Re: parts estimate
that's my plan for it and the pto bearing. if the replacements come sealed, I am just going to leave them that way. It should last me or my girls or whoever they sell it to when I am gone.
