woods l59 mower

Postby 1farmall95cub0 » Fri Mar 22, 2013 4:58 pm

at my local farm auction, there is a woods l59 belly mower there, im really interested, its in good shape, looks to be complete, it comes with a pto pulley, which is larger in diamater than a normal cub pto pulley, but comes with an adapter that would allow it to fit on the cub's pto shaft, is there any reason i cant use the larger pulley? does anyone have a ball park estimate of what it might sell for? thanks!

A ballpark estimate at an auction is hard to say. A year ago I sold a Woods 72 and a Woods 59 both in excellent shape with all hardware, guards and pullys at a large farm auction. The 72 brought $125.00 and the 59 brought $60.00. Ouch and Ouch! It all depends how bad someone wants it, and how many bidders.

Dont know if you are right or wrong,---BUT KEEP IN MIND 9 HP to drive it and the bigger the pulley the more hp needed just to get the mower up to speed!----I had one on a 53 cub one time and it wouldnt even get the blades going very well and when it did the whole mower shook and sounded like jet engine starting up!---I put a 4 inch drive pulley on it and could then get the blades to go but not cut much! I went to the single blade 42 and it worked a little better! --if you have 6 speed then you will be ok, but not with the common 3 speed cub. thanks; sonny

L59 is for left and everything on it is backwards to the normal 59. I think to make it work you can put a 180 degree twist in the belt. Then you have to get the right size pulley, depending on how big "big" is it could be off a 100 or 140 size tractor or even up to an H or M for the really big pullies. Then you have to get the right brackets.

My opinion is could it be made to work? Yes. I seem to remember several threads about doing so.
Is it worth the trouble and expense? Not to me. I'd rather get the right one, either a 59 (has it's usefulness and limitations) or in my opinion the better all around 42.

thanks guys! im glad i posted on here cause i was fully planning on having it in the back of my truck after the auction, but now i think the best thing for me to do is what you said, and stick it out and wait for a good used 42 59 to come around

Yeah, that mower is for a larger tractor. Probably the mounts won't fit up either...
