re-routing muffler
my cubs a 1950 and somewhere down the line a PO had re routed the muffler down below the tractor, iv been meaning to run it back up through the hood but never got around to it, i ordered a muffler pipe which came today, and i have been trying to take off the 90 degree pecie so i can put the straight pipe on, but it is RUSTED!!! and i cant seem to break it loose and am afraid of damaging the manifold, any suggestions? thanks, Kile

Re: re-routing muffler
Kile, Those 90* elbows are pricey (about $50.00 new) so you might want to try and save it. The safest thing to do would be to remvoe the manifold so you could clamp it in a vise. Spray it good daily with a penetrating oil for a week and then heat it up with a torch if it still won't turn. If that fails, you could cut off the elbow, slit the pipe in several place then collapse it into itself for removal.

Re: re-routing muffler
Trade it to someone that want an under slung exhaust set up and has one without the elbow. Less work

Re: re-routing muffler
Use two soft pine boards between the manifold and vise jaws. From my personal experience, I'd say your chances of separating the two, without damage to either one or both, is slim. I think I'd opt for Chris' suggestion of trading.

If you are already thinking you might buy a new one. Go ahead and buy it and sell this one. Will cost less.

Buy a used one off one of the fine members of this forum... Someone here has got to have a good vertical manifold up for sale in the forsale section...
Put your underslung setup up for sale. Bet you will come out ahead on the deal.
Finding someone that's going from vertical to underslung is like finding a needle in a haystack.
