So whilst we've got this '48 all torn apart and because the gasket in the steering gear box is leaking - I thought
Let's what can be done to take the play out of the gears. The ball joints are tight. Can the gear be turned to another wear surface. Is it the worm gear or.....

Ken,
Yes, while you have it torn down, turn the worm gear 1/2 a turn to have a new gear surface.

Re: Steering Play
I have noticed that most of the play on my 48 cub and 67 lo-boy is from the worm gear pushing up on the steering rod. When you turn the wheel watch the rod or shaft. Mine seems to push out of the bolster. May be there is a washer or shim that can be used on the end of the rod to take up the play. Not sure if there is but I think it would take up alot of the play in mine.

Re: Steering Play
Pete, sounds like you may have a washer missing. The shaft shouldn't work up and down that way.

Re: Steering Play
Hi ya Pete - No worries. I just reviewed the parts diagram and listing and don't see a spacer called for.

Hi Bob - they sure did some major redesign at some point after 1948. My #6 is an oil seal, #7 is the steering shaft bearing w/oil seal and 23 is the steering gear arm.
