COOLING SYSTEM FLUSH

Postby Chet » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:25 am

Would some of you "ol timers" help me with flushing my cooling system. Owners manual states " ..... mix 2 lbs of ordinary washing soda with 9 3/4 quarts of water.........
In 1947 I don't recall what ordinary washing soda was since I was only 11 years old. What is the opinion about using 20 Mule Team BORAX which contains no phosphates or chlorine?

Chet, "washing soda" is sodium carbonate. I'm not a chemist, but it seems to be effective in cleaning out the cooling system deposits without hurting the radiator or other possibly vulnerable parts (to modern, stronger agents). Borax is sodium tetraborate and I don't know whether it would be as effective or not.

The washing soda is hard to find around here, you frequently have to go to the larger grocery stores to find it.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks to all..... I was amazed at the crud I got out of my three cubs. The arm & hammer soda was what I used.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the washing soda worked as well. My coolant system was bad (as in 20 years dry & rusty bad). I did a flush with washing soda water like the book recommended (with the warmup of course). I was amazed at the color & crud that was in the water when I flushed it out. Glad to get that stuff out of there.
