Copper sulfate is used to control algae in aquariums. Check you local pet store.

Try Don McCombs suggestion. If the sleeves are chrome or chrome composite call Hastings back.

Hastings rails are normally chrome plated to resist wear and extend engine life. - From their web site.

Check out part # 32441.

Their are other ring manufacturers other than Hastings. Actually, I know of one individual who manufacturers cast iron piston rings.

Thanks for the advice

Went to the pet shop today, I got a product called " No more algae" Active ingredients include copper sulfate pentahydrate 0.05%.

I tried it on a few pieces of steel and chome.

Here is what I got when I did the cylinder walls. I was only able to get a few drops to stay on the walls.

I also put some on one of the old rings.

Is it safe to assume cylinder sleeves are not chrome?

I guess it is a bit late, but I have never seen chrome sleeves in a 113 or a 123 engine

The longer the copper sulfate stayed on the walls the more "copper" color it turned.

For my purpose with the tractor I think I'll still go with the cast iron rings (oil ring will be chome) unless
there is anyone that thinks I should go with the chome rings. Not sure of the price difference.

Cleaned up the cylinders some tonight using a ball hone.
Here are some pics of the two worst cylinders (#2 and #3)

This is after a 30 to 60 second honing with 10w-30 motor oil. Trying to get it to look as best as I can, How does it look to you all?

There are a number of Youtube videos on how to hone cylinders. Take a look at the condition of the cylinders after honing.

Top photo. Cylinder needs more work. Bottom two photos - Hard to tell from photos, but I don't think that cylinder will clean up enough to be serviceable.

Crankshaft exposed to cylinder honing debris?

Things have cleaned up a little bit better, nothing perfect. Will the new rings be ok with this?

Ring gaps in bore so far are 0.020 max. is 0.030.

Without seeing and only guessing --- probably not.

The engine needs to be pulled and then completely disassembled. Each engine part needs to be evaluated as to serviceability, including the clutch. All before any labor is conducted to clean up or rehabilitate parts, machine work, or parts purchased.
