HELP!? can't stop fuel bowl from leaking...

Hi Guys,
here I am again - of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most...
One of the kids, being very competent, noticed a bit of gunk in the bottom of the fuel bowl, removed it cleaned it, and we cannot seem to get the thing to seal again.
Old gasket, new gasket, no difference; the leak seems to be on the side nearest the shut off crank. I have done those critters for more years than msn hsve been alive, but this one so far defies me.

Sounds like stuff I have done in the past whilst learning about these things. Could be the bowl is not exactly aligned and it won't seal if it is crooked. If you over tighten it you won't have a bowl. No don't ask how I know. Suggest you take it apart, remove the gasket, ensure that both the glass bowl is clean from grit etc., - I have used a little emery cloth over the lip almost like lapping to clean the lip, and the fuel sediment bowl is also clean. Check the gasket for FOD -- as in Foreign Ojects Dirt etc., If all is clear carefully realign the bowl, gasket and upper part of the assembly. The bail and tightening screw should then seat the bowl properly.

Also check and see if the packing is ok on the shut-off valve while you are at it. It may need repacking or replacement with a ball valve.

Make sure the filter screen goes in under the gasket. Raymond caught me trying to do it backwards once (only once so far).

I just bought a new one because I had a shut off that was stuck. The new one only cost 16.95 at my local Case IH dealer. Pretty reasonable and headache free.

So you're saying the screen goes between the gasket and the glass?

Bill, if you look at the top of the bowl, there is a groove/recess that the screen fits in. That allows the lip of the bowl to fit directly up to the gasket, and the gasket directly up to the shutoff housing without the screen getting in the way.
If the screen is on top of the gasket, it reduces the sealing surface area up to the housing, which may cause leaks.

Have you got a cork or rubber gasket. I suggest the rubber one!

Thanks Raymond, I just never paid attention to it. I always put the screen on the base first and centered it, then put the gasket on followed by the bowl. Never had a leak so I must have been lucky.

Possible leaks are at the threads into the tank, at the shutoff packing nut and where the glass bowl mates to the body of the assembly. The fuel comes into the bowl, then up through the screen and out to the fuel line.

I'm thinking a new bowl is put together as the picture shows.I replaced a bowl with a 3/8' reducing bushing and a 1/4' cutoff valve.A 3/8 cutoff valve looked too bulky for my liking...I will go back later to a sediment bowl,I needed to move on to other problems without worrying about a gas leak...Thanks for this post,I'll look closer now.

The picture is not correct .I'll put it this way.I was looking at a owner's manual for a Model "A " and it is the opposite of the picture shown on this post...I believe this information will save alot of cussing if the model "A" is correct...Rick

Not wishing to hijack this thread, but I have a related problem with the Oliver that I am working on. The old sediment bowl assy was toast, so I bought the $29.95 generic one at TSC. Leaked a little, but the bigger issue was the cutoff valve would not completely shut off the gas. Returned it to TSC and got my money back. Still looking for a replacement.

Question, is it worth the extra cost to get the one for a cub at TM? http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/314fp.htm Or, are there more options? As far as I can tell, the one from TM will work on the Oliver.

After continual issues with original issue ones, I replaced both of my Cub's sediment bowls with the TM ones a couple years ago and have had zero issues since. I am sure mine don’t get the work out most do, but you know Tom stands behind his products and tries to only stock proven items. You may find a source for a comparable quality at a little better cost and perhaps someone will chime in. As to it fitting the Oliver... not a clue.
