disk plowing

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Mon Apr 08, 2013 12:40 pm

A lot of people ask about the kind of job a disk plow does. The answer is that it depends on what you are doing. I have used a 151 rear mount disk plow for years, and turning a garden, corn ground, or something that has been plowed before they do a good job. I like the disk plow because the 151 is easy to mount once you have things set up for it, and it pulls easier than a molboard. Their big advantage though is in new ground, or rocky, gravelly ground, or ground with roots. That is where they really stand out.

If, however, you are turning sod, the old disk plows make a real mess. I was plowing gardens last Fri. and Sat., and Kriss (neighbor) asked me to plow up a spot for a garden by his house. The ground is good pasture sod (orchard grass, timothy, clover, etc. mix), and I should have changed to the molboard plow, but my back was hurting and I had another garden spot to plow after his, so I went ahead with the disk plow. I warned him ahead of time it would look pretty bad, but did not expect quite this bad. There is a back furrow in the middle where Jerry is standing, which makes it look even worse, but with a few rains and a couple passes with the disk it will level out. The ideal thing with the disk plow would have been to plow it in the fall and let it lay all winter, then plow again this spring.

WOW! At least it shows what a Cub can do. It tore the ground up all right! Lol. I sure am glad I'm not the one that's got to get it ready to plant, though.

I would agree. A 193 does turn new sod over more evenly. But I agree, John, switching implements with an aching back is not fun.

As it is, kinda surprised you were able to stay in the seat using your disk plow. :? That's incredible.

I put in a food plot on unplowed ground covered with marsh hay ( ie canary grass) a few years ago using my 152 disk

I sprayed roundup first, then mowed off and raked the dead grass 2 weeks after the roundup was applied

though it should be no problem. the 152 did it no problem, but looked just like your pic #2! the root mass is soo thick roundup did not touch the roots at all it appeared

all is fine there now becasue I till it every year

I think I would have gotten a smoother job with this.

for fun I also plowed a 1/2 acres field for a friend 2 years ago

I asked him to spray roundup first 2 weeks before to prep it for me, knowing if I plowed sod that was green I'd have issues

I showed up and he did not spray round up! I warned himit would not be pretty

used my loboy with fast hitch 1 bottom L 194plow (no coulter)

did not look as bad as this, but not much better either

green sod on fields not plowed for many years, does not plow under well I have found in my limited experience

Kriss drove over the garden crosways to knock the high spots down, then I put 200 pounds of weights on my 28A disk and went over it a couple times, and this afternoon I plowed it again in the opposite direction. Still not great, but a little rain and a couple passes with the Howard Rotavator and it will be ready to plant.

What is worrying me now is that by looking at the long range radar it appears most of the rains are going to pass north of us. The weather guessers were predicing seious rain, and i plowed a little wet, and need the rain to soften the clods.

Weather guessers....they called the last 15 inch snow storm in April, but other than that it is a toss-up...
