I have a 1940's Grass Board

Postby claudiarowe87 » Thu Apr 11, 2013 8:36 am

I have a 1940's Grass Board off of a Farmall Cub. I'm having trouble finding out what its worth. Its great condition, nice yellow color, reads "McCormick-Deering" on the board, the board is not rotted in any way, all the hardware is there to still use it today. It sat in my grandfathers tool shed for many years. It looks as if it was used only a few times because the paint on the back of the board is worn very little. Would anyone on here know anymore information on this item? We still have the original cutter bar this came off of as well as the same cub cadet. And they still function as they did 65+ years ago. But only the grass board is for sale.

Without seeing actual pictures of what you have to determine the true condition, value, and completeness, if it is still in original condition as you say, I would estimate its worth between $75-$100.

I have one in Un-used condition that came with my mower. I have been offered 150.00 for it and didn't accept it. I want to keep it with the original mower. I have seen them on Ebay in the 100.00 range.

What is the year of the Cub that the grass board came off of?

Raymond, did they go to a 2 bar brass rod in like '56? I thought it was around that time period. I wonder if this style would fall in between the years 47-56 at some point?

The two bar style came later to replace the wood board. I'm more interested in the stencil as normally they just have "McCormick" on them for the Cubs.
I'm thinking this board either predates the Cub (pre '47) or came off a very early Cub.

I agree with Raymond, That may have come from an earlier mower. Maybe a horse drawn unit.

Here is one I have that the PO said his dad bought new with his 48 Cub.

I agree with Ray also, I spent a bunch of time researching these before I made that batch of them, if you look in the archives books you can see one with McCormick Deering on a pre production cub and the other units had them also, I believe that the production units just hsd the McCormick on them, I think the 2 bar metal rod came out in the early fifties but never found any real documentation for that, I have a 50 that has been in the family since new and that has a metal rod type, you can see the ones I make look like the style Bill posted, I also have found that some were a couple inches longer were for bigger models but look the same

Greg, when grass is cut, the grass board and wand flip the outer grass back onto the mowed hay. This gives you a narrow clear path to run the right front wheel down and also keeps you from cutting the grass twice.

I guess you would be talking about a C-22 side mower not a belly mower like my C-3 thanks again Greg
