Hyd. leak
I am cleaning my 50 cub for painting and I have noticed oil seeping out of the top of the (lift) box. Is this a case of a bad gasket or what? This tractor has not ran for at least ten years and I cannot see where the pressure would be coming from to force oil out of the top like it is doing.

Re: Hyd. leak
There is supposed to be an expansion plug there to seal the system. it may be seeping around it, the hydraulics are a sealed system and can have pressure internally under certain conditions.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Hyd. leak
Take a look at the plug like John said, but my recommendation would be to get your Cub running first because then you will find out if the hydraulic system may require a rebuild or tear down if it has been sitting idle that long. That way you are not disassembling the unit twice to go back in for an additional repair.
One other side note, if your Cub is a 1950 model, it would not have originally come with an underslung exhaust. It will work properly, but if you are going for an "exact restoration" you may want to consider going vertical with the stack.

Re: Hyd. leak
I am not doing much until I finish getting her running. Hopefully I can get the repair kit for the starter soon. According to the Messicks (spelling) parts catalog that someone on this website recommended ,the underslung exhaust was available from 48 thru 53. I also found a red rounded front gas tank/cowling in a tractor graveyard that has no opening on top for a stack. I am planning on going as original as I can but let us remember, I am going for a working tractor, not a show tractor. Thanks for your kind assistance.

No, you are probably misinterpreting something in the catalog. All year models are in the same catalog.

It would be from some time in the late-'54 to mid-'63 timeframe.

Case/IH's online parts look-up has several published errors within it once you look into other areas.

Re: Hyd. leak
I'm no expert on cubs (still learning) but it seems as though someone told me that if the hydraulic system is low to empty and you fill it and start the tractor without bleeding the system (running it thru the motions with the fill plug removed), it will build up pressure and blow that plug in question loose....Which may or may not be the reason for the leak ....Perhaps some one will comment more in detail whether this is correct or not....Good luck...Dave

I think ALL the Case/IH catalogs cover the multiple years without much distinction for differences. Here is the Parts Manual with the S/N cutoffs for the two exhaust types shown at the tops of the pages:

That is the point Jim and myself are making, looking at your example, if the Cub is truly a 1950 model, the underslung exhaust would have been a later field modification.
It's up to each individual owner what they do with their Cub as Luther mentioned, either method will function properly, I wasn't trying to criticize, just provide some info.

Re: Hyd. leak
The tractor does have traces of yellow paint on it, so I guess it could be a later model with factory underslung exhaust.

On the other hand, it has an early Touch-Control with a pipe plug filler and no arm for the assist spring.

Luther,
Check my post about Welch plug and battery. This is the plug John and some others are talking about. Mine also just blew out. In looking at it, it had some rust pitting around the center and the edges.
You can bet it'll get replaced pronto as it's mowing season, and I need my Cub up and running.

Re: Hyd. leak
The entire tractor was painted yellow with the exception of the yellow tank/cowling. The tractor itself was red to the bone under the yellow paint. I think it was painted when the newer tank was added. All of the numbers match early 50 but I do have concerns regarding the long oil fill. My 48 has a short fill. The hydraulic leak is coming from under the cover bolts. The plug on top appears okay.

Re: Hyd. leak
As a side note, it appears that the fan mounting forks are cracked unless that is a stain of some sort. (There is a special way to tighten the fan described in the owners manual to prevent breakage. The nut does not turn.) If indeed they are cracked they should be either welded or the front cover replaced so as not to damage your radiator or injure someone if the fan were to break loose. Just trying to help. Good luck with your project. Sincerely, Frank
Frank
