Sickle Mower Wear Plates - Up or Down?

Postby summerfi » Tue Apr 30, 2013 11:35 am

I'm putting my L-22 sickle mower back together after complete disassembly, painting, replacing sections, etc. There are 5 wear plates along the blade, each with a flange on one edge. Can someone tell me for sure whether the flange goes up or down? I found an old thread here http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35342&p=285926&hilit=22+sickle+wear+plates#p285926 but it didn't sound too conclusive. The drawing in the parts manual is not clear enough to tell either. I also called Sickle Service and they said to alternate them, which I don't think is right. Anyone know which way they go?

I just looked at one and they were flange down. Don't mean it's right but it cuts great. Grump

In this illustration, you can see that the flange goes down. You might want to review this whole manual. Certainly read the section on wear plates, which continues onto page 4.
