Anyone have a Tahoe? UPDATE

Postby John C » Wed Feb 20, 2013 7:44 pm

My son has a job where he needs a truck, so I was thinking of giving him mine and getting another vehicle for myself.

I have always liked the 2 door Chevy Tahoes and Blazers (1992-1999). Most are 4 wheel drive, which I do not need.

I've also been considering a 4 door Tahoe. Looks like I can get a good one (1998-1999) with ~150K for less than $5K.

Has anyone had one they were pleased with? A 4 door will let me haul the kids and a trailer. Would they pull a 18' trailer well? How is gas mileage for the 2WD? Any advantage to the newer body style (2000 and up)?

Dad has about the same vintage Yukon(suburban, tahoe, yukon) and pulls a 24' Pontoon boat constantly. no issues up or down hills.

Wife has a 2003 Suburban, 5.3 liter flex fuel engine, pulls 16' trailer and a cub just fine, 18 mpg on highway with no load. 189,000 miles and going strong. I am impressed with it, never was a GM man before that one.

I've had a couple of Suburbans in the past. Great set of wheels. Nothing to base it on, but I was always leery of the short wheelbase of a Tahoe.

Well, I soon determined that I wanted a 1999 Tahoe two door; loaded with all options. Pewter in color with running boards and fender flares.

Trouble is, when you get that specific, it gets hard to find what you want.

So, while wandering around at a car show a few weeks ago, I ran across a car that I really liked:

So, throwing caution to the wind (and my Tahoe out the window), we purchased the 1965 Corvair coupe as a project for my 15 year old son, John Mark. He has helped me out with minor bodywork and painting, so I think he will be a good learner for some minor cosmetics on this car. Took both John Mark and Sam over to the church last night (big open parking lot)j for their first stick shift driving lessons. Both of them did fairly well thanks to experience driving the Cubs. The 'Vair is in much better condition than my first car was in when I bought it in 1980.

John, If you need any info on the "Vair" just pm Jim Becker he's the man!
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

a lot of people will tell you they are hazardous, but they are no worse than any other rear engine car. Make sure you keep good tires on it, because a flat or low tire on the rear makes control difficult, as it does with any rear engine car (learned that the hard way with a Renault). If you do engine work on it yourself, make sure you know what you are doing, they are easy to cause problems on if you do not do it right.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

That's good to know! I am in Fort Worth this week and had actually hoped to get in touch with Jim. Didn't get much free time though.

John, I agree on the tires. The seller also warned us about working on the engine. It certainly isn't a car that can be carried down to Pep Boys for a tune up.

You should have been here last Saturday for the monthly club meeting.
