Hydraulic oil leaking into engine

Postby grasser » Tue May 21, 2013 10:07 am

My '77 IH Cub seems to be leaking hydraulic oil into the engine.
The touch control works great with correct amount of fluid.
What do I need to do here?
Hoping I haven't damaged engine by having some hy-tran in there.

All you need to do there is get the rebuild kit for the hydraulic pump, and put it in.

Justin, you'll be fine. Do the rebuild like the others said and change your motor oil while you're at it.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

If the pump has been working fine, you may just need to replace the shaft seal. The older style is a seal, the newer style is an o-ring. They are available from TM: http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/396fp.htm If I'm wrong about this, I'll be taking a pump back off to redo it.

Thanks Men!
The seal looks like a place to start.
Anybody know what size it is (like something I could pick up at Napa to get up and going ASAP)?

If you remove the pump and take the o-ring / seal to NAPA, they can probably match something up for you.

I'm tore apart right now. Does the o-ring go on the outside of the housing?
Between the gear and the housing?
I see a groove behind the key on the shaft, but there's currently not an o-ring there.

If you look at Rudi's parts diagram, the o-ring goes in the left side of part # 10-A. You'll need to carefully remove the old one with a pick and then tease one side of the new o-ring into the groove and then work around until it all is seated. Lube the o-ring or shaft with some Hytran or oil before you reassemble it. Also, make sure part # 8 (pin seal) didn't pop out when you took it apart. It's black and about 1/2 the diameter of a pencil eraser.

As we know, replacing the seal on the hydraulic pump is a reoccurring issue. Let me raise an issue here regarding this matter and get comments from members. I believe that a contributing factor to seal failure may be the closed nature of the hydraulic system. I realize the system was built this way. However, if the internal pressure in the closed system is a contributing factor to early seal failure and forcing hydraulic oil into the crankcase, is there any inherent reason why the system has to be closed and not vented?

Just to put things in perspective, his tractor is 36 years old.
