Blown head gasket?

Hi Y'all,

So Rosie was running pretty good. Occasional smoke and needed water topping off quite often.

She wouldn't start today, thought it was because she sat out in this last storm. some water came out the small hole in the exhaust manifold. Hmmm. Checked the oil, water! lots of it.

Drained the oil, lots of water. With the drain plug out topped off the radiator sure enough water came out the oil drain and out the carburetor. I had taken the hose off from the air cleaner.

Opinions?

How hard is it to change the head gasket? Doesn't seem to difficult I'm fairly mechanical just don't have a torque wrench.

Not that hard to do if you don't break any head bolts. You can borrow a torque wrench from auto Zone just pay a deposit that you get back

I just recently replaced my head gasket and this is what I did. If you do not have to be in a hurry to change it apply some penetrating oil to the bolts for several days or so. Also I took a 12 inch piece of rebar and sat it on each head bolt striking it several times with a hammer. I did this for several days also as I applied the penetrating oil. Mine came off with no problems whatsoever. When you are putting the Head bolts back into the block make sure you apply sealant to the threads to prevent water leakage from the water jacket. I guess it wasn't necessary but I did buy a new set of head bolts when putting my head back on.

I do ave a rain cap. It was a torrent of rain. However, that doesn't explain when I fill up the radiator water comes out the oil pan drain.

Pull the spark plugs first noting what cylinder they came from, see if any of the cylinders have water, that will give you an idea off where the head gasket could be bad, sometimes the coolant will have "cleaned " the spark plug so you can tell where the problem lies

Several schools of thought on the change process, but stoning or milling the head is a good thing. Felpro HS7560 will get you all the gaskets you need. Grade 8 bolts and washers from Fastenal are plenty cheap and have worked fine on mine.
I only torqued mine to 40 ft-lbs and did NOT retorque....got about 6 months on it without issue....

Yep, blown head gasket! So a neighbor friend is a great tractor mechanic. In just a few short days Rosie is up and running again.
