Re: Flail Mower
If he doesn't accept the $150.00 offer don't be shy about giving him the $175.00. Well worth it. If it was close to me it would be a no brainer. I would love to have a Mott! Would work very nice on my trails in my wood lot If I ever get a chance to buy one, I would in a heartbeat.

Re: Flail Mower
Well, its in my shed now. Offered him $150 and I could pick it up in a few days or $175 for him to haul it over here. About half an hour drive. He brought it. Said he thought he might have another belt for it. Looks like Ill get some use out of the one in the pic anyway. Thanks!

Nice! You will like it. See if you can find someone with a sharpener (back side of blade) but it will surely work like it is.

Re: Flail Mower
II just bought a flail mower of that vintage, however mine has an s/n of 1028 and the cutter shaft is square, never seen that before must be really early model.Should have it up and running soon.

Above link, patent plans on flail mower, cutter bar is shown to be sort of diamond shape. John Puckett has an early IH produced flail mower with a square cutter bar. Puckett's flail mower has a plaque or emblem. Thinking the emblem says hammer knife mower.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Flail Mower
You can still get the 3/4 inch blades if you refer them, or at least you could about 3 years ago. Just call Flailmaster and tell them you want the 101031 blades, they can cross that number over. I prefer the heavier blades though, they don't bend as easily if you hit a rock, and you can sharpen them a lot more times.Buzzard Wing wrote:........ My Lo Boy mower is essentially the same vintage, about 1956. I have resorted to using the available wider blades (in a group of 8 to keep balance) but that one looks perfect for it's age.

Re: Flail Mower
Thanks EJP, I know flailmaster does not list everything on their website.... but now it essentially lists nothing (pull downs don't work). I figured if I put 4 pair of the wider ones on each side it should balance out. Seems to work just fine. In fact, with sharp blades and the right pulley (had a speed up pulley) I can even mow at an idle.
Bigschuss, I have found the worst problem is with green, cut, saplings. Real easy to get them wrapped up in the cutter shaft. Not a problem if they are still attached to their roots.
Nice thing about mowing, when you are done a straight line doesn't matter! This is the 'way back' earthworks at Ft Adams Saturday. Lots of stumps, so the DR mowed most of the this area.

Howdy neighbor, I'm not that far away from you. That's a nice looking unit and sounds to be in decent condition. Great find! I wish I'd seen it! Did you find it on Craig's List or where? Does he have another one (lol)?
