Final drive, Replacing outer oil seal on a 47

Postby Pickerincal » Tue Jun 11, 2013 1:48 am

So I'm replacing the final seals while I have it all apart. I've searched the forum and can't really figure out completely what I'm getting into.. The differential shaft pinion seals are easy, pop out and tap in. What about taking out the outer? I have found the how to for a final rebuild but it starts at the reassembly, not the tear down. Am I going to need a puller to get it apart as I see that it is pressed together and what is being pressed in when reassembling the final a bearing or seal or both? :help:

axle has to be pressed out of the housing, you can use a block of wood and hammer, then the bearing has to be pressed off the axle shaft to replace the seal

I am on my phone which makes searches difficult, and I thought I had a more complete disassembly post, but couldn't find it. Here is one for my SA final, which is similar...maybe the photos will help. If you are still having trouble, PM me with your email and I can send you a bunch of photos. I always have a camera nearby...helps with reassembly. With my pea-brain I need all the help I can get!!!!

So pressing the bearing on and off doesn't damage it if done correctly? The bearings look good from what I can tell so far, though I won't be able to know for sure till they come out.
