farmall cub PLEASE HELP

Postby ihcubby » Mon Jun 10, 2013 7:51 am

Hi COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT SURE WOULD APPRECIATE IT..This site is a wealth of knowledge..
I have a 1950 farmall cub with the factory 45L loader..tractor runs good but has white smoke coming out the oil fill cap..SMELLS LIKE ANTIFREEZE..I have had many cubs before and this is the first I have ever seen this...I did clean out the vent tube that goes to the air cleaner it was clogged bad..changed the oil in it.. Has no water in the oil nor oil in the radiator..Is there a way the head gasket would do this the gentleman I got it from said he put new head gasket on it and I doubt he torqued the head down after it was warm, but thought if it was head gasket problem it would have water in the oil....ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT IT MIGHT BE OR HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE..
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

welcome to the forum, sounds like bad head gasket , if he replaced it perhaps it was not sealed properly, most of the new head gaskets should be copper sprayed first before installing them to make them seal, check the heads for cracks and seal the threads of the head bolts as they go in to the cooling chamber

Does the exhaust smell of antifreeze as well? Take off the radiator cap and start her up and see if you have bubbles. It's possible that the coolant is just seeping into the combustion chamber on the intake stroke and burning off.

Check the torque on the head bolts - re-torqueing the head may be all she needs.

thanks for the info. I am going to get a head gasket and see what happens.there is no smoke out muffler at all.oil is clean and not milky and antifreeze is green with no foaming or bubbles.i am going to check for cracks in the head or block but I doubt there is any as the fluids are so clean.i have a super a that had milky oil in it put new head gasket on it still did not work pulled the last hair out of my cranium so I took oil pan off and seen the coolant dripping past the sleeve o-ring seal its not fixed yet but feel a lot better knowing what the problem is, so that's another project one day. I am going to put head gasket on this cub and I will keep intouch to let the site know if it worked or not.
thanks for your time and info

well think I found the problem I hope..all the bolts were torqued down so that's out of the question.I pulled the head off and found this NIGHTMARE ( FIRST TIME I EVER SEEN THIS BEFORE ) cracked #2 piston I wonder if that's what was making it smoke and here I thought I had a bad plug wire LOL

ANY THOUGHTS ONTHIS MATTER....the cylinder wall looks in good shape.

what would make a piston crack like this wonder if someone put the wrong plug in it.

Your link does not work.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

As you probably found out, there is no "sleeve O-Ring seal" in a Cub engine. Coolant could have been leaking into the chamber and going down through the crack or the block could be cracked too. Time to pull that piston and have a good look. I have never seen one like that!

yeah that's as far as I got I am going to pull the loader off and try to drop oil pan..i wish I knew how to post pictures on this site, tried everything and cant seem to get a picture up..well I will post back once I see whats going on with it.
cylinder wall looks very nice so not sure if I should get a whole rebuild kit or just get a used piston and rings.
I just cant understand why it did not smoke out the exhaust at all.
I would like to do it the right way and get a new kit but funds r short right now so I might just put it back in corner of shed and wait till I have enough money to do so.
its a neat lil tractor and its the first cub I have ever owned that had a loader on it.

thanks for your time.

You should have no problem finding a used piston.

Never seen that before either. Not that I've seen a lot of Cub engines apart. The link did work on my iPad and PC.

Shouldn't take too much dough to replace a piston. If you aren't in a position where you can rebuild the engine, then just replace the piston and enjoy your tractor. The longer you leave it broken, the less chance there is that you will get around to it.
Here's one vote for a functional fix.
