woods 42 c question

Postby winkangrin » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:21 pm

Hi everyone. I just bought my second Cub this past weekend, it's a '59,shed kept. Runs great. The deal included a model 22 sickle and the dozer blade.

My first Cub is a '55, and I got taken to the cleaners when I bought it due to my naive state of not knowing anything about cubs. Welds on the head and radiator support, job cold weld and bonding to repair pinhole tank leaks.

That one had a Woods 42c mower. This was a bitch to switch between tractors. Is there a most efficient way to attach and detach this beast? Also, can the woods pulley be used with the 22 sickcle ? Iguess I'm resigned to taking drawbar off to mount 22c. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Woods pulley is I think 9" and the 22 sickle is 4" or 4.5".

Yes, you're correct. The Woods pulley was a monster to disengage from the shaft. Maybe it's not that bad normally, it had been sitting for several years. Guess restoring the 55 and using it just for the sickle might be an option.

The sickle bar mower works just fine with the standard drawbar. Youtube "barnyardengineering" channel. I just put up a video on mounting the 22 a couple weeks ago.

Could you use a Woods pulley with a sickle mower? Yes
Would you want to? I really doubt it if you think it through.
First is getting a belt the correct size (length). Not listed anywhere so some trial and error.
Second is you would roughly double the speed of the lower pulley, which would mean the pitman would drive the knife at twice the normal speed. If everything would hold together at that speed I'm not sure you could hang on to the tractor for the vibration.

My opinion is spend some time cleaning up the Woods pulley to make it easier to get on and off. Chase the threads, get some new 1/4" (I think) bolts and clean the hub and splines. They are only hard to get on and off when they've been on a really long time or neglected.

I use the sickle on my 53, with the drawbar mounted....A larger pulley would cause some problems, (vibration, having to run the tractor at slow speed), not worth the aggravation....4 or 4 and 1/2 is the correct size....I forget how the 4 and 4 1/2 goes but it has to do with the year and HP...Dave
