HyTran in SC tranny?

Manual says gear oil. Did IH ever change this to HyTran?

I don't know if they did. But I think Hy tran would be to thin. The newer seals are a lot closer tolerence than 50 years ago. I would use regular gear oil.

I believe they did, in later 240's and then 404's, because they cut a hole in the top of the torque tube and changed the HydraTouch block to reach down into the transmission housing for a larger oil reservoir.

On an actual Super C, though, gear oil is it. With Hytran you will be complaining about the transmission noise.

If I stay with gear oil, then the problem becomes one of availability. The only gear oil I can find is GL1 and GL5.

Thanks Cecil. That's what I've been using, but I've seen posts on different forums stating that GL5 is harmful to yellow metals. I don't know if there is any yellow metal in a SC tranny, but there is in a cub tyranny

I believe I have seen it changed in the later manuals. I think the manual that came with my 71 reads that you can use either one. I will look and see if I can find it.

Pretty much around the time they introduced HyTran they listed it first in lubricants section of the manuals. Could be to increase sales or because later transmissions also served as the hydraulic 'tank' like the number Lo Boys?
