Carburator rebuild

Postby Pickerincal » Mon Jun 24, 2013 4:47 pm

Is there a step by step how to rebuild a carb with pictures, arrows and do's and don'ts :?: I have a copy of the manual if not. I'm hoping to find something a little more in detail.
:D

I'm not aware of a step by step guide, but these are simple carbs and there aren't many parts to replace.

As for dos and don'ts -
When you separate the carb, pull the top straight up. There is a long idle tube that will snap off if you try to tilt or slide the top.
Also, don't overtighten the screws when reassembling so as not to warp the carb body.
When cleaning the main jet (the brass nut on the outside of the carb, poke the end orifice with some soft copper wire - telephone wire is best, but a strand from some stranded wire will do as well. Then blow it out with compressed air afterwards.

There was a powerpoint by Lurker Carl that wasn't exactly a step by step but it does have lots of tips. However, I could not find it. Maybe someone knows where it is stashed.

Lurker Carl's Cub Carb Fixes is a PowerPoint presentation that Carl did a number of years ago covering just about everything in the fuel circuit. It doesn't address helicoiling however. A few of us have the proper broach and guide bushings to helicoil the fuel inlet. Helicoiling the manifold studs is pretty straightforward. Straightening the top can be tricky if you do not have a jig but it can be done.

Well.. I'm not sure that it leaks, but it does look like it was cross threaded then Nascar'd with a little JB weld. It threads all the way to the hilt and is sitting crooked to the carb body.

Boss that's a generous offer and thank you very much. I might have a guy here that would do it also, let me have him look at it and see what he says. Save some shipping maybe. If not I will pm you. Thanks again :D

If it is sitting crooked then the threads are boogered. Remind the fella to pay attention to the seat for the fuel inlet screen ... kinda important that ..

This is another reminder why the only time a wrench should be used on the fuel fittings is when it is time to finally seat the fitting and ferrule. Should be installed by hand to ensure that the threads don't get cross threaded.

Fuel inlet screen??

It didn't have one.. I'm gonna have to look at it again and look up the screen in the parts manual.
Like I said, the fitting seats all the way in. Don't even know if it is the right fitting so I 'm going to have to research a little.

Maybe shipping it to Boss would be a better idea after all. :D
