IT'S (back) ALIVE ! ! !

Postby DieselDennis » Fri Jun 28, 2013 9:46 pm

Finally, after months of work and parts, she fired up today like a screamin machine !

Completely rewired 12V system, electronic ignition, repaired quarter sized hole in the lower radiator housing, and gaskets all around. Got the ignition timed close enough to where it would run long enough for me to tweak it while running. I've got it timed by ear until I can borrow a test light.

The sound coming out of that straight vertical pipe is AWESOME! Sounds like way more than 8 1/2 hp. Can't wait to hear it under some load.

Ofcourse it's a two steps forward and one step back project. Some coolant leaks reared their head. Need to do some work on my coolant outlet elbow and radiator entrance tube to get that sealed off to the hose. And then whatever other surprises I find in the clutch and drive train.

Thanks to all those who have helped me a long the way. I might could have done it without you, but your wisdom and advice sure helped figure out the missing pieces, and who better to share the great news with!

Can't wait til next Saturday. My Dad's siblings are all coming into town. They have no idea we've been working to revive a 65 year old family heirloom. I hope they all take rides on Granddaddy Vic's old Cub. Their smiles will be wider than the rear tires.

Dennis:

Good to hear that the Cub is up and running :applause: well done :!: I imagine that they will be very happy ...

There is something about the C-60 and a vertical exhaust that just can't be beat. I took my muffler off a number of years ago now and I won't put it back on. The only thing there is a rain cap. I love how it sounds and how the exhaust feels on my hand when Ellie is idling. Smooth and even but with a nice feel of power to it. I don't know how to explain it .. it just is.

Worked on it more today. Got the coolant and fuel leaks fixed.

I'm one tire tube away from a joy ride.

CAUTION, it can not be timed with a test light with electronic ign. you will need a timing light.

Boss,

I do have a mechanic friend that I'm going to ask to come over with this test light and dial it in. It's currently tuned "by ear". I got it close enough to get it to run, and then adjusted it while running til it sounded good. Went past that til it started bogging down, and then turned it back to the sweet spot.
