Cub production stopped in 1979 , was 79 also the last year of large flat head engines :?:

I'm no expert but I think the Cub was the only Farmall with a flat head. When they were done flat heads were done.

The basic cub engine continued into the numbered loboys (154, 185,184). Also I believe some of the early F-12s used a flathead engine. I.H. outsourced the F-12 engine until their own design was ready.

Guess I should phrase the question differently, flat heads in general were of the 20's to 40's time period then OHV started taking over and of course the Cub with its flat head was still in production up to 1979, question is after 1979 was any manufacturer other than the small single piston lawn mower engine companies still making a flat head :?:

because of the simplicity and reliability i have seen a lot of fork lifts and have heard of boats using flat heads.
so a look at industrial engines might be interesting

Dodge and Plymouth used a 6 cylinder flat head. I think up to 1957 or 1959. Then they went to the slant 6 cylinder.

A lot of the older forklifts had a Continental or Waukesha (or even Jeep) engine. A lot of other industrial applications used the same or Chrysler engines. I don't think any of them were still building flatheads by '79. A lot of newer forklifts have OHV engines. I can't think of any other flatheads in production in '79, other than the 1 or 2 cylinder engines such as Koehler etc.

I've been Gooogling and thinking and come to the conclusion that the Cub was most likely the last production flat head, going to keep on researching it , kinda cool info imop ,

Nothing sweeter than a 53 Ford Flathead V-8.....Ford went to overhead in 54....I'm not sure of their tractors.....But their cars went from 32-54 with a flathead V8, I believe....Dave

I totally agree! I myself have had my 1953 ford F-100 flathead V-8 for 22 years now. 2 years ago a good friend gave me his Jubilee Ford tractor that had some issues with it. got it running great after some work and good tuneup. Now I have both the Ford truck and Ford jubilee 50th Ford anniversary pieces. The flathead truck engine is my favorite, the Jubilee does have the overhead valve which started on tractors in 53.
In 1954 all ford vehicles in US went to overhead valve I have heard. in Canada the Flatheads in Fords hung around awhile longer.
