Engine Lost Power

Postby ccvid » Sat Jul 06, 2013 2:40 pm

1st problem. I'm not a mechanic.. but I'll do what I can.
:help:
2nd problem. I let my father-in-law run my Farmall recently when it was low on oil. (It leaks very badly.) Now when I use the tractor it loses power easily when going up hill or pulling to much of a work load. It starts to stutter and will eventually die.

Do you have any recommendations on what I can do to try to get full power back?

Thank you very much!
Ben

Is it smoking pretty badly now?

Is your governor kicking in? Can you do a compression check? Are you getting good fuel flow? And, did your father-in-law work on it?

It is not smoking now. Nobody has worked on it. I've just added more oil back in and continued using it to mow my lawn.

I don't see how the fuel flow could be affected by running low on oil but the engine does seem to hiccup a lot as if there isn't enough fuel.

I don't think a governor is kicking in. I'm not being limited on power, it's just losing power under work loads like simple hills. It doesn't have much of a problem going down a hill... although it seems to have issue anytime I change the up/down angle I'm driving in.

I'm willing to do a compression check. I don't know how though.

The fact that it ran low on oil may have nothing at all to do with the loss of power.

There isn't always an obvious cause/effect relationship with engine problems. Sometimes two things go wrong at the same time.

You may very well have a fuel flow problem. A piece of rusty crud may have broken loose in the gas tank and gotten sucked into the fuel line.

If the engine is not smoking, not knocking, and hasn't seized up, then you didn't run it *THAT* low on oil.

Well that is one of the best things I've heard all week! This is one of those deals where I've terribly disappointed my father-in-law because I wasn't keeping my tractor in good shape.
