A22 mower… How does the pulley come off?

Postby 69ranger » Mon Jul 08, 2013 9:13 am

Hello,
I began working on my A-22 mower that came with my 140 this weekend. Things are going pretty well and I have it mostly apart now. I think this may have been rough handled and neglected more than it was used. All the holes are tight and even the guards are in good shape. Now for the bad news:
The drive pulley is broken. More than likely dropped sometime, before I got it.
I think I can weld it, but it will have to be put in the lathe and trued up once this has been done. All of this is easy enough to do if I could get it off of the shaft. Does any one know how this thing comes off? I have a gear splitter type puller clamped over the pulley and have heated and pulled, but so far no luck. When I stuck out on the pulley, I looked into taking the other end apart and just leave the pulley on the 4 foot long shaft. I can’t figure out how the counter balance weight comes off. I figured it to be a left thread so I tried to turn it left and right with a couple 48 inch pipe wrenches with no luck. It has got to come apart some how, but how?

Can anyone out there help? Any thoughts or words of advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any knowledge they are willing to share.
Brad

The pulley is a left handed thread. Use a real big socket and an air wrench.

Threaded yes, but I'm not sure it is left handed. This is on a 140, not a Cub.

Hi Guys,
Yes this is a mower for a 140 or Super A.
I have taken the Cub mowers apart in the manner described, but this one is different.
Looking at the mower during my lunch hour shows no nut on the counter weight except on the pit man bearing, and it is of course not in the center. Yesterday I used a large pipe wrench on the counter weight to hold it and another on the hub portion of the pulley. I pulled pretty hard but no luck turning right or left. The pulley has a wood ruff key and appears to press on, as there is not set bolt or screw. There must be a way to get this off . I must me overlooking something here.
Thanks for the reply.

Parts catalog shows a 3/16 roll pin. Did you take it out?

Hi Jim,
Yes I drove the roll pin out. I was not if it was original or owner added.

With the pin out, I guess you are down to heat and pull.

I am afraid you are right. It has just about got to just pull off. It is already broke and useless, so I guess I have nothing to lose at this point. Do you think I am wasting my time with this project? Are there quite a few of these around or are they pretty hard to find?
I am going to try to buy a larger puller tonight. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for the moral support.

P.M. sent in regard to the offer of parts. Thanks!

I have good news this morning. I got that stubborn pulley pulled off last night. I built a make-shift bar puller and used some all thread and with a lot of heating and pulling it finally started to move. I came off hard all the way, but I got it.

Thanks to all that responded to my questions.

Brad
