MAJOR setback 58 Cub Project...Help!!! pics

Postby Tractorboy3 » Wed Jul 10, 2013 9:45 pm

Hi Guys....I am so Sick over this...First a brief history ...I bought this 58 cub not running, transmission locked up, with nice Woods 59 Mower for $500. Re-set the shifting forks and Transmission seemed to be fine...all the gears looked good...MAJOR BLUNDER ON MY PART..I have posted many times on the progress..Honed cylinders, new rings, new valves, re-cut seats..Paint..etc etc Finally got the tractor on 4 wheels tonight for preliminary test drive. Ran fine in 2nd gear..then tried 1st and Transmission locked up...Took cover off and discovered the Gear under the Shifting fork for 1st and Rev is Destroyed...It has a couple teeth left that are ground down badly..But most of the teeth are just GONE...See pics ..its a little hard to get picture , .. you have to look hard...
Question...Do I have to Split the tractor again to disassemble the Transmission?? Can I pull the Trans apart from the back of the tractor, leaving the torque tube/clutch assy intact.....Anyone else run into this...is this gear still available???

Thanks for any advice and or input...Tom....

You will not like this, but yes it must be split. At the front of the transmission, not the engine.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

You mean from the front of the gear box...meaning I can leave the bell housing, clutch, Touch control intact??

Yes, that is what John means.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

When I replaced the Transmission case on my 52 cub, I removed the transmission from the rear of the torque tube, I left the engine coupled to the torque tube, If you do this DON'T DEPRESS THE CLUTCH PEDAL WITH THE TRANSMISSION REMOVED, When reinstalling the transmission you, Will need a 2nd.Person One person to guide the transmission shaft through the throw out bearing & into the clutch splines (This can be done threw the hand hole) 2nd person guiding The transmision back into the torque tube (It helps to have the pto engaged & rotate the pto shaft to engage the splines on the main shaft into the clutch splines. Hope this helps Dave F.

Thanks Dave, John, Barnyard...I was hoping to be able to pull the gear box without disturbing the clutch, touch control, steering, etc...all freshly painted...Still a major undertaking though...Understand about NOT releasing the clutch disc

While you are in there, check the tiny holes in the upper part of the trans case. They look plugged or covered over in your pics. These need to be open so trans gear oil can get to the bearings.

One of the Sponsors(link at the bottom of this page)- Hamilton Bob was able to provide me with a full set of gears at a very reasonable cost. Ebay is also another option. You may consider replacing the main bearings while you have it apart. I also replaced the idler gear bushing while in there. Seems to have much less noise now. There is some good info in the How To Section of the forum. Good luck. The tractor looks good !

Here's a happy deal for ya, I have a transmission with a busted case, Pay for the shipping, flat rate box will work, and I can send you the gears out the case. Parts free of charge. Doesn't get any better than that :D Restoration is looking great.

Yep, you don't have to touch the bell housing.

Just be careful and do NOT touch the clutch pedal when you have the transmission off!!! Turned out to be a $200 mistake for me.

Here's a good "How To" for reinstalling the trans/rear end into the torque tube/clutch assy.

One additional note, make sure you reinstall the seal retainer correctly on the transmission shaft. It must be turned with the flt side out and the extension that holds the seal inside the transmission. if it is turned with the bump out it will allow the shaft to move forward and backward enough to let the pto slip.

you are part of the problem!!!

This photo from TM Tractor Parts may be helpful to you during re-assembly. Be sure to take lots of photos during disassembly. They will be helpful, too.
