12 volt starter for my cub ?

I have a 48 fcub and a previous owner has converted it to 12 volt. Except for the starter apparently I just had to have it rebuilt and it was not cheap. My question is would I be better off finding a 12 volt starter or does one even exist that would work on a cub or should I just keep the 6 volt. Thanks for all your help this is a great forum.

A six volt starter will work fine with a twelve volt system, but you will need to take care not to crank for more than 30 seconds then let it cool down. If your cub does not start with that much cranking then you have other problems.

Thanks for the response. yes i have a resitor in line. The price on the 12 volt is about the same as what I paid to have mine rebuilt i thought they might be a little cheaper or easier to find parts for guess i' ll just keep my new 6 volt for now.

Best to keep the 6v one. If the Cub is tuned up, it should fire immediately... if not find and fix the problem. Starters are pretty rugged and rarely cause problems.

Also the 12v starters are 'rigged' differently. The starter switch is a push button on the dash, not operated with a rod on top of the starter. So, it isn't a simple thing to swap them out.

G'day to you and congrats on your '48 Cub. I have a '48 and she is my primary Cub and my favourite. She is 6 volt and going to stay that way. That is just my preference.

The guys have already helped you out on this .. and you having your starter rebuilt was a good idea. These things will last forever almost especially if they are taken care of. Switching over to a 12 volt starter as Larry mentioned has it's own uniques requirements that would be difficult to install on a much earlier Cub.
