What All Is Going On Here??

Postby ricky racer » Thu Jul 11, 2013 10:40 am

I saw this A on Craigslist. It obviously has some backyard engineering going on. As best I can tell, he's running a hydraulic pump off of the PTO and driving the deck off of the crankshaft in the front. I don't see any hydraulic contorls except maybe the Vise Grips on the hyd. unit. Driving the deck off of the crank seems kind of scary to me. When the engine is running the blades are turning.

What do you guys see going on here???

I looked when I first saw the post and couldn't see any way of stopping the mower. A front view might help. I also looked to see if lifting the mower loosened the belt but couldn't tell from the pictures if that was possible but doubted it. It would seem to me to be better to run the hyd off the crank and use the original set up to power the deck. Either way would provide hyd power if not using the deck. Looks to me like power up and gravity down. Vern

I have looked at that picture before, and the more I look at it I believe that hydraulic unit does not lift the deck, the deck appears to run on the rollers and the arms just keep it in place. I do seem to see a horizontal cylinder that may move the deck forward and to the rear to tighten or loosen the belt allowing it to stop.

Certainly an interesting set up.

The hydraulic pump is a Char Lynn. The factory handle controlling the hydraulics is usually broke.

Curious as to how the mower drive pulley is mounted in or on the bolster.

Appears to be slack in the mower belt pulley in top picture, so John is probably correct on how the mower is disengaged from the drive system. How does the operator easily adjust the mower deck height?
I have an excuse. CRS.

It could be that the hyd works as John says however that makes another question. Only one hyd hose so as a lift it would be power up, gravity down. If it is moving the mower front to rear how does it work with a one way cyl? Or am I missing something? Vern

I believe the height is adjusted by putting spacers (washer)s on the vertical shafts where the wheels attach. A lot of the big 3pt finish mowers adjust the height that way.
