vroom vroom

Postby ablondecajunman » Wed Aug 07, 2013 8:15 am

1950 Cub just purchased: I ran the engine for 20 minutes, then turned it off, closed the gas valve @ glass bowl. An hour later i started the cub up and was putting it away when i ran out of gas. I did not realize the gas flow was turned off. Tried for the next 10 minutes to start.... no ! Opened the gas valve, still no help. What do i do next ?
Thank Y*all ! / ablondecajunman / South Louisiana

Hi,

It sounds like a nice cub. Let it sit for a bit and try it again. You know that it runs. It may be flooded, you may need to experiment with the amount of choke needed to start it since it is new to you. And you don't know what state of tune-up it is in. It may need some TLC to start it up.

This site is a great resource to get going on the new to you cub and get it in top form.

Should be something simple. Gas in tank? Switch on? If so, my next step would be to pull the carb jet and clean it. Leave the fuel on when you remove it to make sure you are getting fuel flow then shut it off. Let us know if that doesn't work. Make sure you clean the small hole in the jet with small strand of copper wire then use compressed air to blow out trash you may have dislodged

Check for enough gas in the tank. Just because there is gas in the fuel bowl does not mean there is enough gas in the tank. There is a 1/4 nipple that extends up into the tank to keep the trash out of the fuel system. Don't ask me how I know this. :) Welcome.

I've experienced this. Although I took my entire carb apart, cleaned everything and reassembled, I believe it was the float in conjunction with the float needle right above it. Deposits and other junk sometimes accumulate and cause the needle to stick (closed). The float hinge points needed to be cleaned as well (same scenario where the float will stick in the up position when it is bone-dry in there).
