What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
A question for you all.
My first gear is a bit whiny. Second is quiet. Third almost has a 'chatter' sound at transport speeds.
Now my dad drove one working on our family's farm in high school and remembers the gear whine of both the Cub and the Super A. He claims there's nothing out of the ordinary from what he remembers.
Wondering if some of you notice the same, or given the symptoms is there a likely culprit? I've had gear driven Cub Cadets in the past and don't recall this kind of noise.
Cheers-

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
My cubs have no noise the gears Although it is considered normal by some, there should not be any excessive noise in as good cub transmission. some will say put heavy weight gear oil in it to quit it down, I am for removing the noise by new parts

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
The key here is in what you consider "excessive."
On every Cub I've ever operated, 1st and reverse have an "old tractor" whine to them, 2nd and 3rd are quieter.
I guess if you're getting a butt massage from the vibration and your ears hurt from the noise, it's excessive...

The 57 loboy I have doesn't seem to whine at all, that is once it squeals( from what I assume to be the throw out bearing) a couple of times....Gotta lube it again with out red grease .....However the 53 definitely was used hard in a previous life and the transmission is a little noisy....Not bad just a little... However my vertical exhaust pipe is loose nuff to pull out of the manifold and since that happened I don't hear the transmission at all.. Dave

My lo-boy has some whine, but that is normal, especially from straight cut gears. I would consider a chatter to be abnormal, though.

I have 10 here that have no whine so it is not normal, have you noticed any whine it the cub cadets, they have the same transmission.
It is only normal to a worn transmission , however they will last a long time with the noise.

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
Mine had a little bit of whine. I replaced a damaged case, and the 1st/reverse idler bushing, and brought the entire gear train into spec by the service manual as far as backlash, gear spacing etc. Now it has ALOT of noise. I will tear into it again when it breaks down. (edit, I am sure I will end up eating THOSE words. )

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
I have one, Merlin, my '49 that is quiet as quiet can be. Then there is Lewis... My '55 that I fear driving at all because the transmission is plum worn out.
It really varies by the tractor, but Boss is right...they should be pretty quiet when they are "right"...
Lewis will be torn down this Winter....

All 8 of mine growl/whine/grab/jerk when starting off,---so I figure its normal IH thing!---the A, and SA also got noisy gear trains too!--- I just oil um and run um!!---No way I could ever go thru that many gear trains and put all new parts in them! thanks; sonny

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
This is my first tractor, and i've only had it for about a week (1955 cub), but so far she whines a little in 1st an 2nd. 3rd is pretty quiet. lots of chatter in neutral though.. that worries me a bit. I think the noise is from the PTO though, because it gets louder when i hook on the belt for the mower.

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
Interesting conversational thread. Hmm, my 57 whines loud in third. I also noticed that no matter how far I push the clutch in I get some gear grind. The 51 I had was super quiet in all gears with no grind as I put her in gear. I thought that the whine was coming from the ring and pinion gear not meshing quit right. The grinding, hmm, I wonder if I should adjust the clutch.
Lovin' IH for over a decade.

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
169Cub... Sounds like one of several things:
1. Clutch out of adjustment. Should be 1" of free play in the pedal. After adjustment, there should be no "clattering" in the bell housing...
2. Clutch Fingers out of adjustment on pressure plate.
3. Main shaft pilot bushing dry and rubbing.
4. Main shaft bent slightly, causing drag in the pilot bushing.
Recently, Merlin has developed a bit of a problem with not wanting to stop spinning when I push in the clutch. My clutch adjustment is right as are my pressure plate fingers. Sounds like after mowing season and before snow plowing season, I am going to have to split him to see what the problem is.

Mike, sounds like Merlin has a #3 problem.

Re: What does your tranny gear whine sound like?
This may sound like a strange question, but is it normal for the clutch pedal to bounce a little in neutral?
