Re: High Idle knock
OH! and I thought it could be significant: I noticed that the knock went away when I was moving the touch control up or down. maybe that nut and washer never were replaced after all and something's loose in there? i'm not familiar with what's in there.
Eugene: I'll Definitely pull off the pump and check it out. I have some spare hydraulic fluid for just such an occasion.

Re: High Idle knock
When you get the hydraulic pump off, small flashlight and small mirror. Look down and to the right, in front of and around the cam shaft gear. You are looking for a nut or any stray piece of metal lodged in there.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: High Idle knock
Well I found the nut (see previous post). where should I look to see if it was replaced? I'm sure It'll be apparent when I get the pump off. I'm housebound currently, babysitting while my wife is out. I guess you can't call it babysitting when it's your own kid...

Re: High Idle knock
I pulled off the hydraulic pump and I'm assuming that the nut and washer went on the back of the gear? they were never replaced.
Could the resulting play have caused my knock? everything in the pump looks to be in good shape, but the gear does have a bit of horizontal play on the shaft.
Is the lock washer a standard piece of hardware i can find easily or do i have to special order it?

Re: High Idle knock
Also, getting the pump off was a pain in the rear... the underslung exhaust goes right over the bolts that you need to remove...

Most likely you are going to need this as well : pump gasket kit, 355208R91 It is a bit cheaper .. but not much

Re: High Idle knock
I don't mind paying that for a gasket kit, but that washer... I found an old thread on here with a discussion about using a nylon lock nut with red loctite instead of the standard nut and lock washer, but nobody had a definite idea of whether it was a good idea. Anybody here have any advice in that department? I'd love to save 30 bucks!

Re: High Idle knock
If you are going to use a locknut, use one of these: http://www.mcmaster.com/#hex-locknuts/=o1ei3v
Do not use a nylon insert nut in a high temperature application. Engine temperatures are borderline for the temp range of nylon lock nuts.

Re: High Idle knock
I found an all metal lock nut at the hardware store that looks like it works similarly. There is some wiggle along the gear shaft. the gear is on there very tight but there's a gap of about 1/8 inch between the gear and the pump. Is that normal?

Re: High Idle knock
It's not that the nut was never replaced. It fell off, unbeknownst to the previous owner. He probably sold it to you because of the knock, figuring that it would need major surgery.

Re: High Idle knock
Hi Matt, another western New Yorker, I see! Unfortunately the knock has not gone away, so major surgery is not ruled out. I guess it could still be coming from the pump... When I listen with a broom handle it's loudest in that area, but that's right next to the crank shaft! *facepalm*
