mott mower pulley repair

Postby TJG » Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:49 pm

Hi,

D9 Mott flail mower cast iron PTO pulley split. The split goes through the splines inside. I'm not a welder so I'm asking the welders if there is any reasonable repair for this pulley, or has it given up the ghost?

If no repair any ideas as to replacement? JP tractor?

Thanks much,

Todd

Looks like the 4 inch or 4 1/2 inch pulley also used on a sickle bar mower....If it is, their expensive (over 100.00) on ebay and I haven't located one in New condition....PM me if you find a supplier..Thanks Dave

Long story short, you may be able to braze it or use some Normacast welding rod on it. The bigger problem I noticed is the spline grooves look pretty well worn. I've had good luck using the two piece hub and pulley assemblies like those used on a Woods mower set up. They tighten up real nice on the PTO shaft (that may depend on the condition of your PTO shaft), no wiggles or wobbles, and they don't fall down ...er - uh - don't fall off. :) ...or work loose.

Todd, what is the diameter? I have one hanging on the wall that came to me on my '61 Lo-Boy.

They can be welded by someone that knows what they are doing, I have been using a welded one for over a year. As was mentioned however the splines on yours are badly worn,it appears that it has been run without being clamped tight enough. continuing to run it that way will wear the splines on the pto shaft if it has not already done so.

Those are 8 inch pulleys, and hard to find. that particular pulley has not been manufactured in several years. An 8 inch Woods pulley for a 42 inch mower will work, but if you have the later idler pulleys that bolt to the curve in the drawbar the belt actually lines up just past the end of the pto shaft, so to get the split hub Woods pulley to line up properly you need to install the pulley with the bolts turned toward the transmission.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John, this is the attachment that I have. Are you saying I'd have to move the idler bracket towards the center of the drawbar?

How does the Woods pulley clamp tightly to the PTO shaft? I've looked a pictures on Hamiltonbobs and I don't see how they tighten, unless I'm looking at the wrong pulley.

the woods pulley is made in 2 pieces, it has a tapered center hub that fits the splines, and the outer pulley slides over it. there are 2 or 3 bolts (depending on which pulley) that pull the 2 pieces together locking it in place and clamping to the shaft. Normally it is installed with the bolts to the rear where they are easy to get to, but to get the pulley far enough back to line up with the idlers and still have a good grip on the pto shaft it has to be turned around with the bolts to the front unless you can come up with a way of moving the idler pulleys toward the front of the mower.

The idler bracket is correctly installed.

In other words, it goes on backwards compared to the normal installation. That will work if you need to do that to align the belt as long as the pulley hub tightens up enough. If your PTO shaft is worn too much it may not. I did pretty much the same thing for a Cub 22 sickle bar pulley and it would not stay on the shaft but installed with the bolts facing back (normal installation) it stayed on with no problem but belt alignment was an issue.
