59 Cub pulls hard to the left.

Postby 59Cub121 » Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:14 pm

My first cub and I love it. Just bought it last weekend. Driving it around the yard it seems to pull hard to the left when I let go of the wheel. Is this normal or is something a miss?

Congratulation on your first Cub, but there be more :D , the first thing I would do is jack up the left front and see if the tire turns ok, maybe a bad wheel bearing about to lock up. Good luck

Also check left brake make sure its not dragging. Then go to how to section and find how to align front wheels.

Don't forget the obvious, be sure to check the tire pressure.

LOL The only thing that is adjustable is the toe in, which should be 1/4 inch narrower at front of tire than rear.

G'day to you and congrats on your 1st new to you Cub. They are addictive so be careful

There are lots of resources available to our members and I always strongly suggest that folks spend some time over a :coffee: and follow the links below:

Image to Farmallcub.com :big smile: Forum Family. And you have come to the right place for all things Cub related. If you click on the Site Rules, Regulations, & Important Information, it will point you to  the Welcome Wagon wherein you will find links to many useful sites and topics. One of the most important resources are Owner's Manuals, Parts Catalogs and Service Manuals. The Cub Manual Server is the home of the jpg versions and the /index.php]PDF Manuals -- well the pdf's of course  Enjoy!.

The GSS-1411 Service Manual for Cubs and Lo-boy Tractors - Section 3 - Steering, Front Wheels And Front Axle should be useful.

Also see that you are in NY. Not sure where it is, but if you are anywhere near Kinderhook/Albany area you should think about attending either Cecil's Minifest next weekend or CubFest Northeast in October. Many of us from the Northeast and beyond will be there. Lots of good information and friendships to be made. See the CubFest and Gatherings Calendar 2013 for more info.

Thank you all for the great advice!! I have figured it out. I took the plow off tonight and got a good look at everything. What I found is that the left side spindle was tipped back farther than the right. The caster was way off causing it to pull left. The pin at one time was replaced with a bolt. I loosened the clamp and removed the bolt to find that the centering hole on the inner tube was oblong and caused the spindle to kick back. It must have been loose at one time and ran that way. Simple fix I just moved both spindles out 1 hole wider. On adjusting the tie rods now to compensate I discovered that the right side tie rod has a bend in it. I loosened the clamp and removed the bolt but the inner part wont slide out due to the bend. I did get enough adjustment from the left side to compensate for both. Gave it a test run and it goes perfect now. I am in search of 1 tie rod if any one has one they would part with. And thanks for the invite Rudi. I would love to go but unfortunately I will be in Virginia all next week. I live quite a bit north of Kinderhook up near Lake Placid.

These can be straightened with some patience. :D

The pin is just supposed to index the axle and provide a safety in case the clamp loosens. Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the clamp bolts good, or go to your local hardware store and get some grade 8 fine thread bolts to replace the old bolts.

You said you were going to be in VA...if you are in the south- central part, check with Boss Hog...he has most anything for a cub!!!

Good luck!
