185 motor info help requested

Postby Toolman185 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 8:32 pm

Hello all. New 185 lowboy owner. My motor sat unused for what my mother in law says was about 30 years in the back of a machine shed....a regular time machine. I am looking at either a complete rebuild or possibly a set of rings and gaskets. What I was hoping that someone knows how to interpret the block codes. cast into the block on the left front side are the numbers 251341R8 above that an inch or so the letters L3 and on the machined surface towards the rear below the valve cover are the numbers 60CT2U310506X Note that the third letter C could be a zero...its hard to tell. Any information about this engine would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

It is just a cub engine. C 60. The rings and bearings are can be found at any NAPA parts store. 251341R8 is the casting #
60CT2U310506X is the serial # There should be a Date code too would be something like 5-12-B or something close

If engine not stuck.

1st, prime the oil pump.

2nd, check for stuck valves.

3rd, tune up. Get engine running. Then work engine for a while to determine is condition.

These tractors were primarily used as lawn mowers. You may find the engine as well as the rest of the tractor in pretty decent condition.
I have an excuse. CRS.
