Cub tie rod problem
I finally got my front end heated up and cleaned up,--put back together and the tie rods wont suck the front wheels in to line up!--all my rods show 18" and one front wheel is sticking out at between a 30 degree and 45 degree angle! makes it kick like a jackass!--I now have BOTH thumbs cracked from driving it!---spindle gotta be twisted and no way to get it straight!! It has the key way in the top and no the key is not broke I hate to cut both tie rods and cut a couple inches from them.---If I cut just 1 it will need about 4 inches removed to bring the wheels into line! (this is on the 74)--It still has them stupid fat front wheels on it and I want to trade them for some cub rims.--the fat ones just bog down in my soft tilled ground, then I have to go get a real tractor to drag it out!---right now I have it busy hauling the harvest to the house but have to be careful where I drive!---The 72 with the 3-point hitch has the spud digger on it and the 74 has the tote on the back to haul in the crop! (Virginia got some pics of the cub tater harvest operation!)--- In between the tractors I can lay on the new creeper and fill buckets then dump them into the tote!----- any ideas on the tie rods?---thanks; sonny

Re: Cub tie rod problem
Sonny, I can't visualize how that would happen unless you changed the tie rod length or used a different hole on the axle when you reassembled. Can you post a picture or two?

Re: Cub tie rod problem
Sonny,
I'll bet that one of the keys is sheared off where the tie rod steering arms attach to the spindles. I had a cub like that, and took me forever to figure out what was wrong. I finally got it adjusted where you could drive it, by threading out the tie rod ends far enough that it took up the difference. Then, while horsing around in the back yard, all of the suddon the one wheel started pulling like heck. Got back to the shop and saw the one wheel kicked out like you're describing. Sat down on the floor and gave it a good kick with the bottom of my boot, and it straightened up. Hmmmm. Pulled the steering arm off and found there was no key in it, it was just packed full of dirt and the only thing "holding" the wheel straight was the tightness of the clamp bolt on the steering arm. Must have been like that for years!

Re: Cub tie rod problem
Sonny,
Everything looks pretty good from a mechanical standpoint, you just need a little more adjustment room on the tie rod ends. I'd unthread them, take of the lock nuts, then thread the ends back on and in a little further on each side. This should give you the toe in that you need. This typically is not a big deal with narrow tires, but because you have the wide tires on there, and have the axle set in all the way, you just don't quite have enough adjustment room to bring those wide tires in where you want them. Just take off the lock nuts (really don't need them anyway) and that should give you the adjustment you need.

Re: Cub tie rod problem
Not sure, but it appears that the right steering arm (knuckle) may be bent to the inside, which would turn the tire out. To verify, turn the wheels with the left tire in line with the rears and look at the position of the knuckle, then do the same with the right one. I believe you will find there is a difference. the pictures of the key ways look good, but to be sure you need to remove the arms and inspect the keys. A very tiny bit of shear on the woodruff key will make a big difference at the tire, by the time it is multiplied by the length of the arm.

Agree with John except it looks to me like something isn't right with the left side spindle, twisted or broken internally - maybe.John *.?-!.* cub owner wrote:you need to remove the arms and inspect the keys. Re: Cub tie rod problem
It may be, but considering those spindles are a 1 inch shaft, it would be tough to twist one without damaging something else.Smokeycub wrote:Agree with John except it looks to me like something isn't right with the left side spindle, twisted or broken internally - maybe.John *.?-!.* cub owner wrote:you need to remove the arms and inspect the keys. Re: Cub tie rod problem
The lock nuts didn't give near enough suck in! I did straighten the tube without using heat so it slides free the full length. ------still several inches shorter. I didn't put them stupid tires/wheels on it. They came on it and I don't have the good regular ones to go back on!--- I think the guy that dumped it on the auction hit something at high speed. ---he had all four set out the max then put more spacers to go beyond wide! They set a foot wider on each side past the 59 mower in the uncut grass. ---wouldn't take much hit to twist the shaft at that width ! Steering gear is a little loose but live able if wheels were the right ones and set straight! Thanks; sonny

Re: Cub tie rod problem
Maybe a longer tie rod tube has been installed? Have you checked them against one you know to be right?

Re: Cub tie rod problem
ALL my other cubs are 18" length,(both sides sucked in all the way) so that must be standard for them ! ----the top arms wont budge,---they are t-i-g-h-t , keys are square and tight too!----tried to turn wheels dished in but they hit on the spindle tubes and I dont have longer bolts and spacers to make them work, ( not that I want them on there in the first place)---but as a temp fix I am up for anything until I can do something else ( fix it/sell it/junk it/ etc! LOL!!) does make a good harvest hauler, so I bout gotta keep it! LOL! thanks; sonny

Re: Cub tie rod problem
If they will clear, turn the wheels around. If you need the width back, set the axle out one notch. Now you should be able to set toe-in. Having wheels reversed messes up steering geometry. Are both tie rods same length when fully in?
