Learned today - that you don't apply even a THIN coat of primer to the left brake rod before trying to insert it through the torque tube. Out it came again with GREAT Difficulty

It was cleaned with mineral spirits, sanded, super lube applied - and reinserted it again FREELY.

Both brakes are now installed.

A little something easy to rebuild and paint. Had fun with this one....Well I've had fun with it all :D

Sorry don't have a before picture - but you know how ugly, oily and rusty this was when I started.

Dash, manual lift base, right fender and battery box fully bolted in. The battery is a bit in question - it can't be used with the rubber bumpers - it's too tall. I purchased it in 2010 - I know I saw a post about battery selection - I'll be looking that up.

Remove the bumpers from the lid and use a thin mouse pad. Worry about a shorter battery when this one goes bad and put the bumpers back in.

Got looking at Rex this morning at 6AM. The toolbox I ordered so long ago has been bugging me.....It came painted, not just primed. On assembly I sat it next to the battery box and in some light it looked the same color and other times of day it looked more like the new IH Red. This morning - I took sand paper to it and resprayed it with IH 2150 Red. It had to be done - I could have left it but it would ALWAYS have bugged me.

Now at least if it looks different I know that it's painted with IH 2150 by me. Take a look at some of my photos and see if you see the slight difference.

A good restoration laugh - A Short Story on Rex '48.

So I set about to assemble the steering gear - All parts had been carefully stored back in April. I put the bottom seal in inserted the shaft with gear, making sure to rotate the gear 180 degrees so it would be on new teeth. All was set to attach the steering arm.....Urgent alert - where's the big brass thrust washer? Looked everywhere.....Now remember! - This part was taken apart and placed on my bench having not moved since April. I looked at it HUNDREDS of times. Look in the book at the diagram - turn the unit over - looked at my assembly. Here's where it get's good.

In April for safe keeping I had this BIG Brass washer that I didn't want to lose - Well it fit nicely on the top of steering gear, so I figured what a great place to store it - I'll never lose it there. So the steering gear is upside down on my workbench.....Can't find the brass washer - Ordered another one - it comes in and at $35 - I gasped, saying oh well - I want this part together. Removing it from the package - I checked the parts diagram one last time, noting there should be only ONE BIG BRASS WASHER in the steering box. I turned the unit over to right-side up to find this BIG BRASS washer staring at me from the top of the steering gear - Looked again at the parts diagram again....Then it was the big laugh and    . That washer had been there so long, it even had marks from the spline shaft - so I assumed that's where it went.

Well that $35 brass washer is going back to Randall Implements with a bit of a red face.....You can all have a good laugh about this when you read it and at Cecil's - I deserve it.
:big smile:

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
