Group 19L Battery Source

Postby PVF1799 » Fri Sep 13, 2013 7:43 pm

The battery I purchased in 2010 when there was NO Battery Box - fits in the box, but the posts are at 9" or even with the top of the box. Since the cover bumper keepers actually break that plane - w/o the bumpers installed - I need to do one of the following.

1. Use a thin mouse pad over the top of the battery until this battery doesn't work anymore - as proposed by Denny Clayton

Denny Clayton wrote:Remove the bumpers from the lid and use a thin mouse pad. Worry about a shorter battery when this one goes bad and put the bumpers back in.

2. Buy the Group 19L Battery Now - Could you please advise best supplier you've found and cost.

I've got them at NAPA, a bit pricey but I needed it now and they had it in stock. I've had real good luck with Interstate "blem" batteries @~$35, sometimes hard to come by, however, worth the wait. Find your local distributor, tell them what you want, and leave your name. They have been good about calling when they have one for me.

I cut my bumpers down with a band saw to shorten them up. If you want to go that route, you can measure between the top of the battery and the bottom of the lid to determine what the height of the bumpers needs to be. I left them just tall enough to put just a little pressure on the top of the battery to keep it from moving around. If I recall the bumper keepers are positioned so that they miss the battery posts.

Ken:

I get mine at a couple places. NAPA didn't hold up so good -- but the BCI battery has done pretty good. Still top notch and holds a charge and I am on my 8th year on the 1st one. I am pretty happy with it. If you are not in a rush .. Centennial BCI Group 19L Superior 6V Automotive Battery 450CCA might be an option. You can also look at Interstate or some of the other majors, they may have Blemished batteries that will be cheaper.

Ken,
If you decide to purchase a new 6v battery, I suggest you consider an Exhide COM-1H-P with 625 CCA. Last year I replaced an older NAPA 5019L (440 CCA) with the Exhide and have been very satisfied. Tractor Supply Company carries Exhide and they are less expensive than the NAPA model.

someone said a early VW 6 volt would fit in case and allow top to go on,Don't know what cold crank amps would be though.
Has anyone used one?

I was interested to see that Bill V has had good luck with the TSC Exide battery. I think the TSC battery has the taller battery case, but the price is much better. I think it was about $40 the last time I was at the store. I did not have very good luck with this battery in my restored Farmall 200. My 200 has very low hours on a complete overhaul and high compression pistons etc.. I had to replace the TSC battery after a year. It may have been a bad battery but it also may have been a little under powered for cranking the C123 in my 200. However I have wondered if it would work well in a Cub and may give the battery another try. This time in a 1961 Cub I bought recently. Cubs do not crank nearly as hard as the larger tractors and would place far less demand on the battery.

I don't know the price, but I've had really good luck with the ones I bought from my local New Holland dealer. May jinx myself, but the one in the Cub is about 5 years old, the 8N battery is at least 4 years old with no problems. John

I remember when they were $40.00, too. Now they're $70.00, but I think they carry a little more power.

Denny, Maybe we are talking about two different batteries? Maybe TSC is also selling another 6V battery that is more powerful. This one has 625 CCA.

I saw the COM-1H-P online for $44.99.

http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/e ... y-com-1-hp

I was at the store recently and while I am not 100% certain, I believe it was on special there for about $40. I may return to the store get one soon. I just got the 1961 running and have been swapping batteries in order to work on it and get it running after sitting for over seven years.

According to the above web page, this battery is 8 5/8" tall. Which I think would create a problem using the top of the battery box with the bumpers.

I'm going to be in Tipton to drop off a load for CI Cubfest on Wednesday. For that price I might swing by Montpelier and pick up a half dozen of them for my Cubs. It would be worth the one hour detour. They are $89.95 here.

$89.95 in Ohio and $44.95 listed on the TSC web site? That seems strange. I could be wrong about the special and could have looked at the wrong tag. But I would think the price online would apply everywhere.

I called the Marion Indiana store just now. That is the closest store to me. The sales person indicated that they have them priced at $44.99 and have five in stock. The young man said he was unaware of a special , but that the price now is $44.99.

Barnyard, I think that Marion is even less of a detour for you. I will most likely go get one of the batteries tomorrow, but that will leave four in stock.

I had thought about going to the event in Tipton, but I am not sure at this point if I can make it.

Barnyard, I hope to make it there. I have not been to a Cubfest. It is only about 60 miles from the farm.
