Manifold pipe loose

As you can see the hole is enlarged slightly

Exhaust pipe.jpg
No threads
Exhaust pipe.jpg (20.52 KiB) Viewed 7987 times
The pipe pulls out of the manifold and is loose as a goose...While I got the tractor down I may as well fix it if possible....Anyone ever used JB Weld or any other thing to tighten these two pieces up....I see no signs of threads on either...It'd be nice to able to replace the pipe it if needed...Maybe I should just leave it as is....I read it does effect the engines performance...Comments... :thanx: Dave

Dave:

I would chase those threads .. 1-1/8" NPT ... then get a piece of 1" ID sked 40 pipe about 17" - 18" long, threaded .. and screw it into the manifold. Poof all done. If you want a muffler on it, then you may want a shorter pipe depending on what looks good to your mind and will keep the exhaust out of your face. :!: :D

It looks like there may be some threads on the manifold (top pic). Did it break off at some time in the past and someone jamb in a piece of pipe? If so then there may be the broken off stub of the original pipe still in the manifold, which can be removed (carefully). Hard to tell from the pics.

It's 1" pipe thread. The Canadian has been sniffing coffee, again.

Re: Manifold pipe loose

Well, I am not exactly a plumber, but .........

1" Sked 40 Pipe has an OD or outside diameter of 1.133" which is as close to 1-1/8" as you will get. So whatever the size of the die is .. ......... :big give up: I assume that you need a 1-1/8" tap to chase those threads.

According to the National Standard Taper Pipe Threads Size NPT Chart

NPT is defined by ANSI/ASME standard B1.20.1.

Nominal Pipe Size is loosely related to the inside diameter of Schedule 40 pipe. Because of the pipe wall thickness, the actual diameter of the threads is larger than the NPS, considerably so for small NPS. Other schedules of pipe have different wall thickness but the OD (outer diameter) and thread profile remain the same, so the inside diameter of the pipe is therefore different from the nominal diameter.

You need a tap to chase the threads after the manifold is clean of any residual pipe that may be there. I can see the threads .. at the top of the manifold .. but the pic isn't sharp enough to tell if there is a broken off piece down farther in the manifold. It would kinda make sense for the piece of pipe that was stuck in there.

You will need a die for the pipe .. and I think Ed will bring that with him to Cecil's ...

As far as measurements, I am at a disadvantage ... I have to think in 3 systems ... Imperial, Metric and SAE .. so sometimes I even confuse myself :lost: :help: :worthy: :big give up:

Yeh the thread thing can be confusing for sure, but I got the jest of it....I don't have any taps and dies that large anyhow and it would be handy to bring it to Cecil's and we can all discuss the threads. ....As I always say, " I ain't no plumber, or no plumber's son, but I'll be your plumber, till your plumber comes"....

How about spending $95 and buying a new manifold, problem solved for your lifetime. Yes Rudy doing pretty well here, if our government does not get together and solve some problems, I will get some real estate dealers name from you and move north.
