Touch Control Boots

Postby Xperimental » Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:45 am

I have been working on my newly acquired 1961 Cub which had not run in about 7 years. I have it running now and it appears to have a good engine. I am wondering about the touch control boots. There are no boots on the valve or the hydraulic piston. Would this tractor have had leather boots originally? How important are they? It appears that the tractor was used for many years without them. I cleaned an accumulation of dirt from around the rear of the piston. The TC unit does not have any leaks and functions well. After seeing this, I looked at my other Cub, a 1956. I didn't remove the hood to get a good look, but I don't see any boots on the TC on it either. Were these boots often removed and not replaced?

I am sure they serve a purpose. Most of my Cubs does not have them either. I have always thought that if you use your Cubs regularly maybe you do not need them? Someone else will chime in shortly.

You can order the new replacements from TM parts.

I'm sure the major function is to keep grit and dirt off the mechanism and to keep it from finding its way internally....Just happened to have a couple apart this weekend at the Northeast fest and from all evidence its a good idea to have them....Surprisingly the ones removed were in good shape for their age and reused...Make sure to get wire in the groove....As Terzell stated their available thru TM..... :D

Did my 1956 Cub have the leather boots originally? Will the rubber or leather boots fit any Cub TC?

The rubber boot on the top piston goes inside the piston, if you look inside you will probably see whats left of it an inch or so down inside of it

Thanks Tim I will take a look inside the piston of my 1961 Cub. My 1956 Cub does not appear to have any boots either. Would the 1956 also have had the rubber boots?

I ordered the rubber boots when I did the touch control on my 1953 Cub. The "big" boot didn't fit the cylinder, it fit the TC control spool. The small boot didn't fit nuthin'.

the large boot fits the lower control shaft, the small boot fits inside the upper piston
