Underslung Exhaust Pipe

I need to replace the underslung exhaust pipe on my 61 Cub. I see that CIH has the part, but I wondered if any one is making the pipe and/or making the pipe in stainless. I suspect that a local muffler shop could fabricate one at a good price, but have not looked into that option yet.

I was going to buy a new one also, but luckily I was able to get all mine apart to clean it up and reassemble. I know TM or Steiner sells them for a little over $100.

Neither of the two muffler shops that I stopped at several years ago could bend pipe that small. One suggested a custom motorcycle shop, but that sounded like the price would be higher.

you might check with yogie.....I am pretty sure bruisers pipe is stainless and he had it bent locally

I have also thought about bringing the exhaust out past the hood and then into a vertical muffler. I don't want to cut a hole in the hood but if I could put a vertical exhaust on this Cub and make the change reversible, I may go that way. I have seen pictures of Cubs that have this sort of vertical exhaust, but I have not seen any close up pictures of how this was done. It seems that the tubing to do this would need to be fabricated by a muffler shop. Does anyone have pictures or experience with doing this?

The vertical as you describe would involve as much or more pipe bending and does the underslung. The exhaust route would be as tortuous as the underslung. The original vertical was the lowest cost to produce and gave a direct route for the exhaust gases. For many purposes, I like the underslung better.
I have not miked the pipe, but some size of EMT ( thinwall conduit) might be close enough to be usable. If so, an electrician could bend it if a good hydraulic bender is available.

If the sizes do not match, and they probably will not do so, I would use the EMT that is larger than the exhaust. Some welding might be required at the ends.
This might be your Plan B or C.
