Throttle / Governor question

Should I have full range of throttle? Currently my throttle will only back out to about the middle and move forward about 4-5 notches. That's all the throttle I have. I was wondering if the governor may need to be adjusted.

How much does the throttle on the carb move. How much it moves on the throttle quadrant is not the does all. How far the throttle at the carb moves is what counts.

The throttle at the carb moves fully open to close. However, it seems to run at low RPMs. I've been thinking about buying an inexpensive tach to see if it gets near 2000 RPMs.

I find if I advance the throttle past the last notch , I get a little more power. I'll take another look at the linkage

If the governor is not adjusted properly can't it limit engine speed regardless of throttle position?

Jason, the governor does affect the performance of your cub. It needs to be properly adjusted between the carb and governor arm each time the carb is removed. You may not be getting full use of your throttle control if the throttle rod running to the governor is hanging or if the governor stop has be adjusted down for some reason.
As far as an rpm gage, a non-expensive one seems to work well for those of us who only work on our own stuff and not a mechanic with all the right knowledge or tools. The one seems to work well for our use.

From your control lever, follow the rod forward to the other end. It will be attached to an L-shaped lever with the governor spring on the other end. See if the L-shaped lever pivots freely or is sticking to the pivot shaft. It should pivot freely and it sounds like yours isn't. If it doesn't move, you aren't really telling the governor to change speeds.

If it is sticking, squirt some penetrating oil on it and work it back and forth until it moves freely. Be very gentle with it, several have been broken while trying to free them up. It is not easy to reach with the hood in place.

Jim, I will check that tonight. I know it moves, but maybe it isn't moving enough. Can you give me an idea of the range of motion I should see when moving the throttle? What are some things to look for limiting its movement?

It should move enough to let the control lever move through the entire range of the notched quadrant without binding.

This is probably a silly question, but what is the "notched quadrant"? Where would I look for this?

Oh... It definitely does not travel the full quadrant. I think 25% of this range is probably fairly accurate as to the amount of movement I have currently. I will work on trying to loosen that up tonight. Just to clarify, I need to lubricate the "L" shaped bracket on the shaft to get this motion back?

I squirted some WD-40 around the "L" bracket and worked the throttle back and forth quite a few times. The quadrant has 13 teeth on it. The range I have is from 7-13. So from about middle all the way forward. I can't get it to move back any further. It just bows the linkage rod. Ideas?
