Mott color

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Wed Oct 30, 2013 7:45 pm

My Mott flail is getting a lot of rust spots and peeling paint on it, so I am in the process of repainting it. Does anyone know the shade of yellow they used on them? It looks to be very close to the yellow wheel weights I have. It had a very thick layer of yellow over a layer of read, over a layer of yellow.

No real help but the D9 I just got is red. The brochure in Rudi's Server shows the 60" unit on the back of a numbered Cub as yellow.

If I recall, Buzzard Wing painted his with IH Federal Yellow (with a foam brush) and it turned out nice. The ones I've seen look to be close to a federal yellow shade.

The three point Mott we had at work was some shade of yellow.

I think the Lo Boy one was originally red. It seems to be from about 1957. There isn't any provision for a rock guard on the roller bearings. The Cub Mott was originally yellow and federal yellow looks good on it. You could go with whatever you have in stock. Yellow is more expensive by the quart, but you can paint stripes on the road with what's left.

Not having much luck finding the Federal Yellow in my area, but the NEW Cat Yellow seems to be a pretty close match to what is on mine, so I think I will try it.

On mine, the housing has an unusually thick coat of yellow on top of everything else, but the push arms that mount it to the drawbar, etc. all appear to be a normal coat, it may have been painted the same way. I wonder if Buzzard Wing's old mower may have made it's way to Mo.

If you don't mind ordering paint to get some good (and correct) stuff, I have ordered from Ken at C&G because they stock it on the shelf and will ship it right out. Good people to deal with and it sure beats our local dealership that is about 75 miles away. Otherwise, I've had a hard time finding that color too locally.

The yeller one came from western CT (apparently the original color in the above picture) and the red one came from NJ. He was also selling a 57 Lo Boy that the mower apparently belonged with.

I have been really happy with IronGard paint and would be hard pressed to use anything else. I can't even guess how much yeller came my way from C&G, but it's a lot. They are truly excellent folks to deal with. The trouble with paint is must ship ground, so it takes longer.

I did paint it with a brush! The best is a made in USA foam brush, it self-cleans in the trashcan.
