Are these old filters and box collectible?

Postby amecks » Thu Nov 21, 2013 6:12 pm

I bought these 2 (only TWO) filters on eBay for $9.00. I plan on using the filters but I want to make sure someone doesn't want them or the box. How old are they?
It is probably too expensive but if someone wants them they could send me new replacement filters and pay shipping both ways or send me three filters and I'll pay for mailing these to you. Maybe someone just wants the box only - make an offer. The box is as shown in photo - the flaps are torn on one end - other end OK. The filters are Cub filters 376373R91. If no one wants it I'll stick the box up on the ledge in my garage for decoration! Al.

Sure are pretty....Makes me wonder why they would go to such extremes to make something you can't see look so good  ....The pride in the way they used to do things, I suppose.... :D Dave

You can't see them in use but there's two times that are more important to see them. First is you can see them when you buy them and then again when you change the oil. The reason they're all prettied up is product branding. Ever heard the phrase "Only use genuine IH replacement parts". If you open up a box of filters and they're brown cardboard with silver tops why not just buy the cheaper ones down at the automotive parts store. With these you're getting assurance you're getting genuine IH!

I don't remember what they brought, but genuine IH items like that are sold every year at the IH National Auction. Jim Becker would probably have an idea of their worth.

Personally, I wouldn't use them because of their collector value. Since IH is out of business, that makes every IH replacement part rise in value. IMO I'd be buying a Wix 51153 filter down at the O'Reilly or NAPA store and storing those genuine IH filters back in the box. Once used, they're ruined for collector purposes...

Putting a value on something like this is probably harder than doing the same for a whole tractor. I don't recall specific examples of oil filters but a lot of the collectibles (small nice parts, advertising items etc.) tend to be all over the place at auctions. It is like trying to guess what something will bring on eBay. I recall a yard stick bringing $20 at last year's IHCC auction. Other times, I see them bring $2 to $5. I've seen an even wider price range in antique shops. If no one is patricularly interested, this box with 2 nice filters might go for a starting bid of $5. Another day, if 2 guys each decide they want it, it could bring ten times as much. A "fair" price is probably closer to the high end of that range than the low end.

For $9, somebody would want one to run a tube through it and make a table lamp.

In any case, I sure wouldn't use them in a tractor.

If I had them I would sure hate to use them. I think I would have them in the display cabinet with all my other NOS parts and literature. I think the things from years past are fading to quick. I regret every move grandpa made when cleaning out the old IH dealer, burning everything definitely was not the way to go. I remember grabbing a few things and dad made me give them up, and I think now he regrets that. I was 10 then. Sorta makes me want to cry when I think of it.

I have to agree with the others. They're worth more to a collector than a user. I bought the below box and filter at a flea market for $2.00 several years ago. I figured the box alone was well worth that. I keep them displayed in my shop. They don't take up much room on top of the McCormick-Deering twine box.

When I changed the oil on my 'new' 64, I found one just like that...I was hoping it wasn't original to the tractor.

If I had them I would definitely put them up on a shelf for display. As some of the other guys indicated, they are probably worth more than four or five filters especially since you can get after market filters so reasonably at NAPA, O'Reilly's etc.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

These filters have been saved from my ruthless hands! Traded them for cash to buy modern replacements. They'll be decorating a garage shelf somewhere in Tennessee.
Thanks for everyone's input. I knew they were too neat to destroy!

Mike,

They definitely make a great show piece. I have 6 of the original Cub Filters in the Boxes too (not in the picture). I hope to have a nice shop someday where I can display everything nicely. I have started getting displays etc. The only problem is the wife can't park in the garage!
